‘Crime Syndicate #1’ (review)

Written by Andy Schmidt
Art by Kieran McKeown, Bryan Hitch
Published by DC Comics

DC is giving the Crime Syndicate their own limited series! I never thought that I would see the day that this happened but here we are! After recent appearances, I am guessing there is a need to have a series with them in it.

So I gave this a read. It isn’t bad. The Multiverse is reborn and we given a look at the new Earth-3.

After getting through the first few pages, I discovered that this is more of an origin story.  We see the beginnings of Ultraman. It is a pretty horrifying opening to be honest.

From there, we are introduced to the rest of the team members, one by one. I enjoyed this very much as it gave us a sense of who each of them are.

It also helps cement who this version of the Crime Syndicate are and most importantly what their goal is.

By the end of this story, I was intrigued.

The cool thing is that Earth-3 can feel a bit impenetrable. But writer Andy Schmidt and artist Kieran McKeown do a great job of streamlining all of that and making it feel accessible. It is pretty simple and they don’t bog down the story at all with over explaining.

There is a cool Ultraman backup story that features art by Bryan Hitch. This one is very sharp and good and the detail in this short story are amazing. The art by Hitch is very good as well and the whole thing just works. I am interested to see where this title goes from here.

RATING: B+
