This is the final part of the Crisis on Infinite Earths animated films that DC has been releasing in the last few years. I loved the comic book as a kid and these animated films really have been great overall. This is indeed a satisfying conclusion to the overall series.
However, you definitely have to be a comic book fan and really into animated comic book movies to like it.
If you’re not into both? You’re going to hate it. For the rest of us who like this stuff, it is a wonderful and full experience for sure.
Basically, this is a new (kind of) version of the classic story.
It doesn’t have any recap to speak of so you’ll be diving right into the story if you’re viewing this. Supergirl killed the Monitor in the previous chapter and all hell with The Bleed has indeed broken loose.
There is very little to prepare the heroes for how this chapter begins.
All of the events have led up to one thing that the previous chapters predicted: all out war. And that is exactly what the creators of this film give us.
Unfortunately, the fighting in these films isn’t that great. What I mean by that, is that for some unknown reason, it always falls flat and just isn’t very exciting. Part of that might be that the animators just aren’t very skilled at it, or the writing just might not be that tight.
Whatever it is, anytime that there is a fighting scene, it gets very boring very quickly. Even worse than that, because there is so much of it, it starts to become monotonous. And that is never a good thing.
There are some really heartbreaking and heartfelt moments in this as well.
Watching the Justice League go up against the Monitor for the final battle has those “heroic” and emotional moments that one would hope for. And it isn’t just one version of the Justice League that we are seeing here. It is every version that you could possibly ask for. We get to see the emotion mostly from the weight of the decisions of Supergirl. She has to make some truly tough decisions with this film. These decisions affect her in the biggest way possible.
I do wish that this was a bit longer to reflect the ramifications of Supergirl’s decisions. I also wish it had more development to let those decisions sink in. Every felt kind of rushed and then put together to give the biggest emotional impact. That’s great and all but if there is nothing that builds to those moments, all you are left with is something they is actually pretty hollow. That’s a shame because there is just so much good material to mine.
Everything is also pretty grandiose here as well. That makes the conclusion of this film series pretty big. And it is very big. It changes the worlds of DC forever and it definitely closes out the Tomorrowverse in the biggest way possible. All of the movies up until now and their stories come to a head by the end of this film. It’s an ending point for sure but perhaps also the start of something that can be brand new.
The voice talent that they have assembled for this film is great. It is awesome to have Jensen Ackles and Mark Hamill showing up to voice the characters that we have come to know them as. And this is Kevin Conroy’s last go at voicing Batman. It is a fitting end to his legacy overall. It gives the project just that little bit of class that it needs. Conroy was the best actor ever to voice Batman hands down. He shall forever be missed.
Overall, this is a decently entertaining film from DC. While there are definite flaws, it is solid enough and vivid enough to be worth a watch. The filmmakers really do shoot for the stars with this one. They don’t always hit their mark, but there is enough here to make it all worth it . I wouldn’t say it is worth repeat viewing but as a one time watch experience? It is enjoyable enough for that. I look forward to see what animated films come next from DC, depending on the direction that they decide to go in .
