Art by Mikel Janin, Valentine De Landro,

Published by DC Comics

This is actually my favorite book of the whole Future State initiative.

It really does take the character of Superman and puts him in a completely new alien setting.

The results are pretty staggering. I was on the edge of my seat l throughout the initial story in this comic.

So, the first thing that is apparent as this issue begins is that Superman is the rising champion in the gladiatorial pits of Warworld.

We get to see Superman make short work of some of the challengers.

But has Superman gotten caught up in the gladiator way of life?

Of course not. He is Superman. So there has to be another reason why he is doing this. We find out pretty quickly what that is. I have to say that it was damn exciting to see Superman having these battles against Mongul’s cronies.

It all leads to Superman going up against the big boss himself.

This whole thing leads to a title fight that has to be seen to be believed! It also leads to a hell of an ending. If there is anything bad about this story, it is that it is too short! I would love to see an entire limited series with this creative team and concept.

Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson does great work writing this and the art featured is some of Mikel Janin’s best work. This is some great stuff.

Added in to the value of this issue are some decent backup stories. It is all very well done and this comic is, again, definitely the best of the Future State storyline.

RATING: A
