‘Future State: Harley Quinn #1’ (review)

Written by Stephanie Phillips
Art by Nicole DeMeo
Published by DC Comics

This is an intriguing new take on the old Harley Quinn character. I have always been a bit cold on Harley. She just seemed overused. While there have been some bright moments (like the animated series), but mostly she doesn’t do much for me as a reader.

This particular book feels a bit familiar, but it does has a good twist on the usual.

Stephanie Phillips is a good writer and makes Harley a bit more grounded. We get to see Harley fighting for her life at the beginning of the issue. I was interested by this and the issue actually became a lot of fun.

Harley is soon captured is by the evil Magistrate.

They are a private military group who have taken over Gotham City.

What do they want with Harley?

Well, they want to know some information that Harley has. They want to know everything Harley knows about Batman, his family, and even everyone in his rogues gallery.

The Magistrate wants to use this knowledge to strengthen their hold on Gotham City.

But Harley isn’t going about to let this happen. The rest of the issue deals with this as Harley tries to escape the Magistrate and also keep her information hidden.

Phillips writes a script that does not let up. She also gives Harley a stronger personality than usual.

The art by DeMeo is absolutely gorgeous. It is stunning and it is well crafted.

The whole book is really an enjoyable read and I look forward to where the second issue takes us.

RATING: A-
