More established characters from the DC and Marvel universes are finding themselves coming to television.
Rachel Taylor has been cast as Trish “Patsy” Walker on the upcoming Netflix/Marvel Studios series, A.K.A. Jessica Jones. The character first appeared in 1944 as “Patsy” Walker and took on the costumed identity of Hellcat, in Avengers #144 back in 1976.
According to Variety, “Trish Walker (Taylor), the best friend of Jessica Jones (Kristen Ritter), is a syndicated radio talk show host, former model and child television star who’s best known to her fans as “Patsy” Walker. In the series, Trish will help Jessica embark on the most dangerous case of her career.”
It’s not known yet if “Patsy” will take on the Hellcat mantle during the 13-episode series, which follows Jessica rebuilding her personal life and detective career, after a short and tragic stint as a superhero.
Earlier this week, it was announced that David Tennant would be playing Jessica’s nemesis, Killgrave, a.k.a. The Purple Man.
The 13-episode series will follow Jessica, after her short-lived and tragically ended superhero stint, as she rebuilds her personal life and detective career, getting pulled into cases involving extraordinary people in New York City.”
Meanwhile, CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series has found it’s Jimmy Olsen.
Following the announcement that Melissa Benoist would be playing Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks has been cast as iconic DC Comics character, Jimmy Olsen.
Brooks, best known from his work on True Blood and In The Valley of Elah, follows a legacy of actors who have played the role including Tommy Bond, Jack Larson, Marc McClure (who played the character in the Christopher Reeve films and opposite Helen Slater in 1984’s Supergirl), Michael Landes, Justin Whalin, Aaron Ashmore and Sam Huntington.
Produced by Arrow and Flash‘s Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family), CBS’ Supergirl is a fresh take on the iconic characters.
Kara Zor-El (Benoist), Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman).
Now 24, Kara feels disempowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself. But an unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city, and they soon take notice. She’s even given a new moniker: Supergirl.Olsen, in the CBS take, is a photographer at CatCo., where Kara works. He’s the salt of the earth and this only makes Kara crush on him even more. The character has recently been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret. But with Kara emerging as Supergirl they grow closer.
