GLEE’s Melissa Benoist Cast As SUPERGIRL in New CBS Series

Melissa Benoist, who co-starred in this year’s Whiplash and played Marley for two seasons on Glee, will be donning the red cape of Kara Zor-El in the upcoming television series, Supergirl.

Written by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, Supergirl is part of Berlanti’s growing DC superhero television universe which already features Arrow starring Stephen Amell and The Flash starring Grant Gustin, both on the CW.

Unfortunately, despite the Berlanti connection, there’s no plan for a crossover at this point.  At the Television Critics Association press tour CBS President, Nina Tassler didn’t seem particularly excited to cross over the series anytime soon,  “Well, those two shows [The Flash and Arrow]
are on a different network, so I think we’ll keep
Supergirl to ourselves for awhile.”

According to Deadline, this series, “centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist). Born on the planet Krypton, Kara
Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth,
she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin,
Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman
abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”

The character was previously portrayed by Helen Slater in the 1984 film Supergirl and by Laura Vandervoort on Smallville.
