‘The Department of Truth #5’ (review)

Written by James Tynion IV
Art by Martin Simmonds
Published by Image Comics

This is one hell of a book.

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when I started to read this series.

However, the stories have been very strong and interesting. Writer James Tynion IV had found his groove with this book and I have been enjoying these wacky stories very much.

This is also the end of the first story arc. A lot of questions are answered. A lot of new questions are formed.

There is a mysterious man in Agent Cole Turner’s apartment. What is he doing there? What could he possibly want? Well, we found out pretty quickly.

The man is from the Black Hat organization.

We get to find out what his connection with them actually is. We learn more about that organization as well.

But then, as the issue goes on, we get to see how it all affects Cole. It was quite surprising to be honest.

Cole questions whether or not he is on the right side of the War for the Truth. We get to see him have a bit of an existential crisis. This whole thing leads to the end of the issue which sets in motion what might be coming up. It is pretty thrilling.

Tynion has written another fine script here. There is a lot to like and it is intriguing throughout. The art isn’t my favorite but I am adjusting to it enough.

Overall, this is a decent issue to a fine series.

RATING: B+
