These “Tales From The Dark Multiverse” titles have been a little long in the tooth, I feel. It feels like an idea that has more than worn out it’s welcome. It is like Marvel’s “What If?” title and it feels a little tiresome.
That is, until you realize that Bryan Hitch has written and drawn this comic book here. Wait, what?
Holy crap is all I can say.
Having Hitch as the creative force of this issue made me want to crack this comic open immediately. I wasn’t disappointed either. Hitch imagines a world where the Flashpoint was never undone! This creates a whole lot of ramifications that just made me jump for complete joy.
We get to see the Thomas Wayne Batman still going around Gotham.
Hitch handles him extremely well and it is a dark and brooding take on this character(can we get a full Hitch Flashpoint Batman comic maybe?). There is also all of the things that Flashpoint established that Hitch uses to great effect.
A lot of the focus is on the conflict revolves around the Reverse Flash and his plight. He has to make a choice to be a part of this crazy new world. We get to see a lot of character from him this go round. His conflicts and inner morality are displayed here throughout the issue to great effect. It is a bit deeper than your usual comic book fare.
Hitch does a tremendous job here of making his tale matter beyond the high concept. The story is extremely strong and smart. The artwork is, of course, extremely well done.
This is the best one of Tales From The Dark Multiverse books that DC has done. It is very good indeed.
