‘Hex Wives #4’ (review)

Written by Ben Blacker
Illustrated by Mirka Andolfo
Published by DC Comics

This is one of the more unique and strange titles to come down the pike in quite some time. Ben Blacker is a fine writer and his work here is excellent. I’m enjoying it very much and the one thing I will say is that I’ve never read anything quite like it! That is a good thing indeed!

The opening sequence has Becky flying in the air! She was trimming her hedges and suddenly found herself airborne.

It’s not for long however as she hits the ground fairly hard. Izzy happens to see her and runs over. They have a discussion and realize that both of them are changing. But into what?

Blacker throws a lot of questions at the audience quickly and all of them are intriguing.

Izzy tries to brush it aside as much as she can. But it’s getting harder and harder to do so. Then we see that her husband is operating with a special organization underground. They are watching Izzy and the other wives!

We get a little more information as to why. I don’t want to spoil it but it’s a pretty damn solid plot line.

Izzy’s husband thinks he can control them. But then Izzy meets up with some of the other wives. They are experiencing some of the same phenomena that Izzy is. They start coming to some realizations. The husbands are plotting behind their backs! There is a lot going on for sure!

By the end of the issue, all of the wives are back in their homemaker modes. They are serving their husbands. They are being dutiful. They are being the caretakers in the family.

That is, until Izzy does something. She takes a knife and does something very simple. And that’s when you know nothing will ever be the same again.

Blacker is a great writer. He really comes into his own on this title and it’s a glorious thing to witness. The art by Andolfo is perfect for this comic book as well. It’s expressive without being too cartoony. This is another fine chapter of this story.

I, for one, can’t wait to see where this exciting creative team takes us from here.
