‘Suits: The Complete Series’ (Blu-ray review)

Universal Studios

This past year, several years after it’s original run ended, audiences rediscovered the legal drama Suits via various streaming platforms, finding greater success that it found during it’s original run.

Created by Aaron Korsh, Suits ran on the USA Network for nine seasons and featured a unique mix of sharp dialogue, compelling character dynamics, and stylish production. Having the opportunity to binge the entire series over a month or so, Suits is a must watch series.

The series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a brilliant college dropout with a photographic memory, who unexpectedly lands a job at Pearson Hardman, one of New York’s top law firms, despite not having a law degree.

Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), a top attorney at the firm known for his charm and unconventional methods, takes Mike under his wing.

Together, they navigate the high-stakes world of corporate law while keeping Mike’s lack of formal qualifications a closely guarded secret.

Suits boasts an outstanding ensemble cast, each bringing depth and complexity to their roles, contributing significantly to the series’ allure.

Gabriel Macht’s portrayal of Harvey Specter is central to the show’s success. Harvey’s journey from a lone wolf to a more emotionally connected leader is depicted with magnetic charisma and evolving vulnerability.

Patrick J. Adams, as Mike Ross, embodies the internal conflict of a man grappling with the ethical implications of his fraudulent career while leveraging his extraordinary talents. Their dynamic creates the heart of the series, drawing viewers into their mentor-mentee relationship that grows into a profound friendship.

Gina Torres commands respect and fear as Jessica Pearson, the formidable managing partner whose strength and moral complexity guide many of the firm’s critical decisions. She served as a mentor to Harvey and he continues to be her main confidant in the firm.

Rick Hoffman plays attorney Louis Litt is a fascinating mix of comic relief and deep complexity. His character’s evolution from an often misunderstood antagonist to a beloved partner adds a rich layer of humor and pathos to the show.

Future royalty Meghan Markle portrayed Rachel Zane, is a driven paralegal with ambitions to become a lawyer. Rachel becomes Mike’s love interest and their relationship provides some of the series’ most heartfelt and pivotal moments.

Sarah Rafferty’s portrayal of Donna Paulsen is another highlight, as she brings to life the sharp-witted and resourceful secretary whose loyalty and insight are invaluable to the firm. Donna’s transition from Harvey’s secretary to COO of the firm underscores her integral role in both the professional and personal realms of the series.

Suits also developed a rich world of supporting characters portrayed by some truly wonderful actors including Wendell Pierce, Gary Cole, Rachael Harris, Christina Cole, David Costabile, Neal McDonough, D.B. Woodside, David Constable, Carly Pope, Erik Palladino, and Eric Roberts.

By the time the eighth season started Adams, Torres, and Markel had moved on and new members of the firm included Katherine Heigl as Samantha Wheeler, a powerhouse litigator, who’s fierce loyalty and dynamic presence add fresh tension and alliances within the firm. Dulé Hill who had previously guest starred in season seven, joined the firm as Alex Williams an old friend of Harvey’s who he hires as a senior partner,

Amanda Schull played Katrina Amanda Bennett, who had recurred during seasons two through seven, previously worked for the firm as an associate. She went on to work for Rachel’s father before rejoining the firm in season eight as a senior partner.

Over approximately one hundred hours of television, Suits through its writing and cast allowed all of the major characters to evolve significantly. Many of the episodes stand alone, but there is a strong connection to the overall story that concludes with a step into a new chapter in many of the character’s lives.

Unfortunately, the last two seasons loses some of the magic as Macht and Adams’ on-screen chemistry was really the heart of the series. From one arc to the next, the series’ growing mythology fleshed out the world beyond the office.

Suits excels in its high entertainment value and watchability.

The series adeptly balances intense legal battles with personal growth and office politics, making it engaging for a wide audience. The fast-paced narrative and clever dialogue provide a gripping viewing experience, while the character-driven storylines add substantial emotional depth. The interplay between Harvey and Mike is particularly compelling, evolving from a mentor-mentee relationship into a deep, tested friendship. The sharp wit of Donna and the eccentric humor of Louis ensure the series remains light-hearted and dynamic, even amidst its more serious undertones.

Extras included in the box set are all carryovers from the original releases and includes audio commentaries, deleted scenes, gag reels, outtakes, featurettes, webisodes and alternate episode openings /endings

Much more than a legal drama, Suits is a masterclass in blending sharp legal intrigue with deep, character-driven storytelling. From its inception to its resurgence and eventual conclusion, the series maintained a high standard of quality and viewer engagement. Its memorable characters, intricate plotlines, and sleek presentation ensure that it remains an addictive classic in the realm of legal ensemble television.
