This is another fine chapter from the Batman/DC/Walmart line of books. I’m enjoying these comic books very much and this issue nails it yet again. I love that this is a second part of a storyline, yet you don’t have to read the first part to enjoy it. Brian Michael Bendis has written a story that is both simple and complex but always accessible to anyone who is reading.
Bendis takes Batman out of his element for this tale and puts him into a small town. He is looking for a girl named Jinny Hex. Longtime readers of the DC Universe knows of the character Jonah Hex and Jinny is a direct descendant.
Batman strolls into the town and has a funny encounter with an old man. The old man tells Batman that “the Joker isn’t around here.” Bendis takes Batman and puts him out of his element. It’s surprising and fun and it feels new.
Batman is directed to a gas station where he encounters Jinny Hex. Batman wants to know why she donated an a 15 million dollar antique jeweled egg without caring. She tells him to basically mind his own business as it was her inheritance after all.
Then she plainly tells Batman that the egg just doesn’t belong there. It leads to more questions, the biggest one being just what the hell is with this egg that makes it so special?
Batman leaves. But then we see that there is more to Jinny than we thought. It’s very interesting for sure.
From there we go over to Amsterdam where Bendis packs the last few pages with just about everything he can fit in. The Riddler is there. And then Batman shows up. And then Deathstroke! And then finally Green Arrow shows up! Is there anyone else I missed?
It’s cool but it moves a little fast. This whole story is twelve pages but man, is it overpacked. It’s a small complaint though as we get to see Derington draw these different characters which is really cool. It’s worth the price of admission for sure. It just loses focus at the end.
