Prison break! Doctor Aphra style!

Doctor Aphra #14 is another highly entertaining issue in the series. What’s satisfying about this adventure is that the two concurrently running storylines, Doctor Aphra/Sana and Just Lucky/Aridce, finally collide.

And it was worth the wait.

We pick up right were we left off in Doctor Aphra #13; Aphra and Sana sidelined in the brig.

And if you were wondering what happened to Just and Aridce after they were poisoned by Deathstick, then read no further because I’m about to reveal…

Just and Aridce are right there with them.

Brought, and I assume cured, by their mentor, Crae.

These four are fabulous together, the banter between them feels natural. What’s even better, it feels Star Wars.

The anime-styled art is also tone perfect for this issue.

Needless to say, our foursome escapes. There’s nothing horribly novel or original about this break-out, but as with any well written set of characters, it’s our anti-heroes styles and antics that make it fun.

True to form, Aphra remains laser-focused on her goal, getting out of there with her prize; valuable information stored on a pretty necklace.

The events pertaining to Han Solo, frozen in Carbonite, are incidental.

I rarely have anything to gripe about when it comes to Doctor Aphra, but this time it feels like the story cut corners by having Aphra and the gang stumble upon the head of Crimson Dawn, Qi’ra, Han Solo’s former girlfriend, who happens to have the valuable necklace Aphra seeks.

Plot convenience is one thing, but all four former prisoners somehow finding themselves in what should be a highly secure area while remaining hidden is a bit of a stretch. Even for the Doctor Aphra series.

We also end on a repetitive note with Deathstick bursting onto the scene. Again. Just like the last issue. We’ve reached our limit on Deathstick closing panels. The War of the Bounty Hunter series is officially on notice.

Still a huge fan.
