The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage
By Nick de Semlyen

The Last Action Heroes
opens in May 1990 in Cannes, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone waltzing together, cheered on by a crowd of famous faces. After years of bitter combat—Stallone once threw a bowl of flowers at Schwarzenegger’s head, and the body count in Schwarzenegger’s Commando was increased so the film would “have a bigger dick than Rambo”—the world’s biggest action stars have at last made peace.

In this wildly entertaining account of the golden age of the action movie, Nick de Semlyen charts Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s carnage-packed journey from enmity to friendship against the backdrop of Reagan’s America and the Cold War. He also reveals fascinating untold stories of the colorful characters who ascended in their wake: high-kickers Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan, glowering tough guys Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagal, and quipping troublemakers Jean-Claude Van Damme and Bruce Willis. But as time rolled on, the era of the invincible action hero who used muscle, martial arts, or the perfect weapon to save the day began to fade. When Jurassic Park trounced Schwarzenegger’s Last Action Hero in 1993, the glory days of these macho men—and the vision of masculinity they celebrated—were officially over.

Drawing on candid interviews with the action stars themselves, plus their collaborators, friends, and foes, The Last Action Heroes is a no-holds-barred account of a period in Hollywood history when there were no limits to the heights of fame these men achieved, or to the mayhem they wrought, on-screen and off.

Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs
By Jamie Loftus

Hot dogs. Poor people created them. Rich people found a way to charge fifteen dollars for them. They’re high culture, they’re low culture, they’re sports food, they’re kids’ food, they’re hangover food, and they’re deeply American, despite having no basis whatsoever in America’s Indigenous traditions. You can love them, you can hate them, but you can’t avoid the great American hot dog.

Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs is part investigation into the cultural and culinary significance of hot dogs and part travelog documenting a cross-country road trip researching them as they’re served today. From avocado and spice in the West to ass-shattering chili in the East to an entire salad on a slice of meat in Chicago, Loftus, her pets, and her ex eat their way across the country during the strange summer of 2021. It’s a brief window into the year between waves of a plague that the American government has the resources to temper, but not the interest.

So grab a dog, lay out your picnic blanket, and dig into the delicious and inevitable product of centuries of violence, poverty, and ambition, now rolling around at your local 7-Eleven.

Doctor Strange: Folio Society Special Edition
Selected and Introduced by Roy Thomas

Take a trip to the outer reaches of comic-book consciousness with Doctor Strange. Marvel’s Master of the Mystic Arts celebrates his 60th anniversary with this kaleidoscopic collection from Folio. Former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Roy Thomas selects and introduces 14 of the Sorcerer Supreme’s most dazzling exploits, created by comic-book legends including Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Brian K. Vaughan and Jason Aaron. Every tale in this truly eldritch edition has been scanned directly from original comics. It also includes a stunningly accurate replica of Strange Tales #115, the 1963 Marvel anthology in which the Doctor reveals his startling origin story. Multiple-award-winning Doctor Strange artist Marcos Martín provides original cover art for this edition, as well as designing hypnotic blue and purple endpapers, and a sulphurous yellow slipcase bearing the esoteric Super Hero’s iconic Seal of the Vishanti. Following previous volumes in Folio’s Marvel Heroes series — Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk and ThorDoctor Strange will spirit you away to some of the most bizarre corners of the Marvel Multiverse.

Created by Stan Lee and visionary artist Steve Ditko, Doctor Stephen Strange was once a gifted but conceited surgeon. His dextrous hands ruined in a car accident, Strange received both salvation and supernatural enlightenment from an enigmatic guru known only as the Ancient One. Originally featured in Strange Tales #115, this iconic origin story is included in the separate replica comic book that accompanies this collection. This stunning facsimile comes complete with vintage ads and original Silver Age back-up strips. The other classic tales selected for this collection reveal Doctor Strange as something of an occult Sherlock Holmes, complete with faithful assistant (the redoubtable Wong) and iconic real-world address (177A Bleecker Street, New York City). Steve Ditko’s hallucinogenic world was taken to ever more dizzying extremes by successive generations of artists including Gene Colan, Frank Brunner and Michael Golden, all featured in this collection. P. Craig Russell’s phenomenal Art Nouveau-style graphic novel, ‘What Is It That Disturbs You, Stephen?’ is also collected here in its entirety.

Armed with a crimson Cloak of Levitation and an endless array of spells at his fingertips, Doctor Strange adventures through worlds of astral projection, mind-merging and communion with cosmic entities, a phantasmagoria anchored by a vivid cast of recurring characters. In this collection, you’ll find the first named appearances of Strange’s mentor the Ancient One, as well as rival sorceress Clea. Other classic Doctor Strange characters including the evil Nightmare, the god-like Eternity and Strange’s alien apprentice Rintrah all make debut appearances. Stalwart Super Villains Baron Mordo and the dread Dormammu feature throughout, along with a guest spot from Dracula himself! Further bizarre encounters occur in the 1982 tale ‘To Have Loved… and Lost!’ in which Strange undergoes an out-of-body experience so extreme that he confronts his identity as a work of comic-book fiction. This is a universe where atmosphere and ideas triumph over earthly logic, in tales rendered by some of the most imaginative comic-book talents of all time. Doctor Strange is a spellbinding volume that literally unleashes the mystic arts of Marvel.

The Right Stuff: Folio Society Edition
By Tom Wolfe; Illustrated by Tavis Coburn and Introduction by Andrew Chaikin

‘What is it that makes a man willing to sit up on top of an enormous Roman candle, and wait for someone to light the fuse?’ In The Right Stuff, hailed as one of the greatest books ever written about space flight, Tom Wolfe sets out to answer the question, and lays bare the mindset and motivations of the first American astronauts to risk life and limb to beat the Soviets into orbit. He blows apart the mythology of the Mercury Seven – Deke Slayton, Gus Grissom, Alan Shepard, Wally Schirra, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter and Gordon Cooper – and the forerunner of them all, supersonic test pilot Chuck Yeager. Dazzlingly written, this is a thrilling account of men who ‘pushed the edge of the envelope’ at work and play, all to prove they possessed the quality that Wolfe famously christened the right stuff. Opening with a new introduction by space historian Andrew Chaikin and featuring Tavis Coburn’s striking retro-styled graphic illustrations, this is an exceptional edition of a 20th-century classic from the Folio Society.

This is the ultimate edition of Tom Wolfe’s most celebrated non-fiction book. To produce it, the Folio Society tapped into the expertise of Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon– the definitive account of the Apollo space programme, published in its own lavish Folio edition in 2021. Chaikin worked closely with Folio and illustrator Tavis Coburn on the visual look and feel of the book, which takes its cue from 1940s comic art and Soviet posters of the time. The illustrations portray the astronauts as Cold War heroes, and Coburn’s beautiful retro-futurist cover design perfectly captures the aesthetic and spirit of the early Space Age. Andrew Chaikin’s new introduction explores the origins of the book, and its uncanny ability to get inside the mindset of the Mercury astronauts: ‘Wolfe seemed to have found his way into their high-octane psyches and spilled their secret, innermost thoughts… they became three-dimensional human beings.’

By Brian Solomon

Superheroes! is the ultimate reference book about the men and women in tights who fight for what’s right and the comic book phenomenon that conquered the world.

The Endless Vessel
By Charles Soule

A few years from now, in a world similar to ours, there exists a sort of “depression plague” that people refer to simply as “The Grey.” No one can predict whom it will afflict, or how, but once infected, there’s no coming back.

A young Hong Kong based scientist, Lily Barnes, is trying to maintain her inner light in an increasingly dark world. The human race is dwindling, and people fighting to push forward are increasingly rare. One day, Lily comes across something that seems to be addressing her directly, calling to her, asking her to follow a path to whatever lies at its end. Is this the Endless Vessel to happiness? She leaves her life behind and sets out through time and space to find out.

From its opening heart-stopping scene in the present day at the Louvre in Paris, through the earthly meetings between Lily and her loved ones past and present, to a shocking and satisfying conclusion in a truly enchanted forest, Charles Soule has channeled history, science and drama to create a story for the ages—a story of hope and love and possibility. This is a novel you will not soon forget.

The Puzzle Master
By Danielle Trussoni

All the world is a puzzle, and Mike Brink—a celebrated and ingenious puzzle constructor—understands its patterns like no one else. Once a promising Midwestern football star, Brink was transformed by a traumatic brain injury that caused a rare medical condition: acquired savant syndrome. The injury left him with a mental superpower—he can solve puzzles in ways ordinary people can’t. But it also left him deeply isolated, unable to fully connect with other people.

Everything changes after Brink meets Jess Price, a woman serving thirty years in prison for murder who hasn’t spoken a word since her arrest five years before. When Price draws a perplexing puzzle, her psychiatrist believes it will explain her crime and calls Brink to solve it. What begins as a desire to crack an alluring cipher quickly morphs into an obsession with Price herself. She soon reveals that there is something more urgent, and more dangerous, behind her silence, thrusting Brink into a hunt for the truth.

The quest takes Brink through a series of interlocking enigmas, but the heart of the mystery is the God Puzzle, a cryptic ancient prayer circle created by the thirteenth-century Jewish mystic Abraham Abulafia. As Brink navigates a maze of clues, and his emotional entanglement with Price becomes more intense, he realizes that there are powerful forces at work that he cannot escape.

Ranging from an upstate New York women’s prison to nineteenth-century Prague to the secret rooms of the Pierpont Morgan Library, The Puzzle Master is a tantalizing, addictive thriller in which humankind, technology, and the future of the universe itself are at stake.

Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood
By Maureen Ryan

In this spectacular, newsmaking exposé that has the entertainment industry abuzz and on its heels, Vanity Fair’s Maureen Ryan blows the lid on patterns of harassment and bias in Hollywood, the grassroots reforms under way, and the labor and activist revolutions that recent scandals have ignited.

It is never just One Bad Man.

Abuse and exploitation of workers is baked into the very foundations of the entertainment industry. To break the cycle and make change that sticks, it’s important to stop looking at headline-making stories as individual events. Instead, one must look closely at the bigger picture, to see how abusers are created, fed, rewarded, allowed to persist, and, with the right tools, how they can be excised.

In Burn It Down, veteran reporter Maureen Ryan does just that. She draws on decades of experience to connect the dots and illuminate the deeper forces sustaining Hollywood’s corrosive culture. Fresh reporting sheds light on problematic situations at companies like Lucasfilm and shows like Lost, Saturday Night Live, The Goldbergs, Sleepy Hollow, Curb Your Enthusiasm and more.

Interviews with actors and famous creatives like Evan Rachel Wood, Harold Perrineau, Damon Lindelof, and Orlando Jones abound. Ryan dismantles, one by one, the myths that the entertainment industry promotes about itself, which have allowed abusers to thrive and the industry to avoid accountability—myths about Hollywood as a meritocracy, what it takes to be creative, the value of human dignity, and more.

Weaving together insights from industry insiders, historical context, and pop-culture analysis, Burn It Down paints a groundbreaking and urgently necessary portrait of what’s gone wrong in the entertainment world—and how we can fix it.

Voices From Krypton
By Edward Gross; Foreword by Brandon Routh; Afterword by Mark Waid

Hailed as possibly the most comprehensive oral history of Superman to be committed to print, Voices From Krypton combines over 85 years of Superman’s legacy into a sweeping tale of how the champion of the oppressed became one of the world’s most recognizable pop culture icons.

Written by veteran entertainment journalist Edward Gross and culled from over 200 interviews conducted by the author, this book covers it all via oral history, a way that’s never been done before through the words of comic writers, artists, editors and historians as well as actors, directors, writers, producers, visual effects technicians, authors and many more.

The journey starts in the days before DC Comics even existed and tracks the Man of Steel from his introduction in the pages of Action Comics #1 through the Golden, Silver, Bronze and modern age of the character in print. Beyond that, inside views are provided on every live action, animated and audio take on the character, ranging from Ray Middleton’s live appearance in the costume at the 1939 New York World’s Fair to the Bud Collyer radio show, Fleischer animated theatrical shorts, Kirk Alyn’s movie serials, George Reeves’ Adventures of Superman, Bob Holiday’s Broadway jaunt, the classic Christopher Reeve films, the Superboy series starring, first, John Haymes Newton and, then, Gerard Christopher; Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Superman: The Animated Series, Tom Welling’s Smallville, Brandon Routh’s Superman Returns, Henry Cavill and the Snyderverse, Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman & Lois, the Tim Burton directed Nicholas Cage movie that never happened, and much more.

H.R. Giger: Debbie Harry Metamorphosis: Creating the Visual Concept for KooKoo
By Chris Stein; Introduction by Debbie Harry

When the visual artist H.R. Giger, best known for his biomechanical creature and set design for seminal 1979 sci-fi-horror film Alien, encountered Debbie Harry, the punk icon and lead singer of globally successful new wave band Blondie, the results were sublime. The artwork for Harry’s 1981 debut solo KooKoo album cover was deemed so frightening it was originally banned on the London Underground. The fantastical videos for two of the tracks on the album, ‘Backfired’ and ‘Now I Know you Know,’ featured Giger himself piercing an Egyptian sarcophagus and a newly brunette Harry reimagined as a xenomorphic Giger creature.

With photographs and words by Chris Stein, Harry’s long-term collaborator, artefacts and sketches from the Giger archive, and an introduction by Debbie Harry, this is an essential behind-the-scenes insight into the processes of an incredible creative partnership.

The Elissas: Three Girls, One Fate, and the Deadly Secrets of Suburbia
By Samantha Leach

Three suburban girls meet at a boarding school for troubled teens.

Eight years later, they were dead.

Bustle editor Samantha Leach and her childhood best friend, Elissa, met as infants in the suburbs of Providence, Rhode Island, where they attended nursery, elementary school, and temple together. As seventh graders, they would steal drinks from bar mitzvahs and have boys over in Samantha’s basement—innocent, early acts of rebellion. But after one of their shared acts, Samantha was given a disciplinary warning by their private school while Elissa was dismissed altogether, and later sent away. Samantha did not know then, but Elissa had just become one of the fifty-thousand-plus kids per year who enter the Troubled Teen Industry: a network of unregulated programs meant to reform wealthy, wayward youth.

Less than a year after graduation from Ponca Pines Academy, Elissa died at eighteen years old. In Samantha’s grief, she fixated on Elissa’s last years at the therapeutic boarding school, eager to understand why their paths diverged. As she spoke to mutual friends and scoured social media pages, Samantha learned of Alyssa and Alissa, Elissa’s closest friends at the school who shared both her name and penchant for partying, where drugs and alcohol became their norm. The matching Save Our Souls tattoo all three girls also had further fueled Samantha’s fixation, as she watched their lives play out online. Four years after Elissa’s death, Alyssa died, then Alissa at twenty-six.

In The Elissas, Samantha endeavors to understand why they ultimately met a shared, tragic fate that she was spared, in turn, offering a chilling account of the secret lives of young suburban women.

Marvel Comics in the 1970s: The World Inside Your Head
By Eliot Borenstein

Marvel Comics in the 1970s explores a forgotten chapter in the story of the rise of comics as an art form. Bridging Marvel’s dizzying innovations and the birth of the underground comics scene in the 1960s and the rise of the prestige graphic novel and postmodern superheroics in the 1980s, Eliot Borenstein reveals a generation of comic book writers whose work at Marvel in the 1970s established their own authorial voice within the strictures of corporate comics.

Through a diverse cast of heroes (and the occasional antihero)―Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Deathlok, Dracula, Killraven, Man-Thing, and Howard the Duck―writers such as Steve Gerber, Doug Moench, and Don McGregor made unprecedented strides in exploring their characters’ inner lives. Visually, dynamic action was still essential, but the real excitement was taking place inside their heroes’ heads. Marvel Comics in the 1970s highlights the brilliant and sometimes gloriously imperfect creations that laid the groundwork for the medium’s later artistic achievements and the broader acceptance of comic books in the cultural landscape today.

Cheers: The Complete Series Blu-ray

One of the greatest sitcoms of all time, Cheers: The Complete Series features all 270 episodes from 11 seasons plus featurettes on 33 discs—with vivid picture and sound quality.  Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, owns and runs Cheers, a cozy bar in Boston. Somewhat snobby, beautiful and intelligent Diane Chambers (Shelley Long)  – forced to become a waitress when her fiance jilts her – constantly bickers with Sam. Eventually, they fall in love. Several wacky characters make the bar their home-away-from-home, including sarcastic waitress Carla (Rhea Perlman), beer-loving accountant Norm (George Wendt) and know-it-all letter carrier Cliff (John Ratzenberger). A few seasons later, after Diane leaves Boston, Sam sells the bar to buy a boat and sail around the world. But his boat sinks and he returns to bartending. Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley), the new (more ambitious) manager, hires him back. They love to hate each other and eventually get together as well.  The cast also includes Woody Harrelson as bartender Woody Boyd, Kelsey Grammer as psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane, Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier’s wife Dr. Lilith Sternin, and Nicholas Colasanto as Ernie “Coach” Pantusso, Sam’s former coach and later, bartender.

Created by the great James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles, Cheers featured a number of notable guest stars over the years including Tip O’Neill, Jay Thomas, Frances Sternhagen, Tom Skerritt, Dan Hedaya, Jean Kasem, Harry Anderson, Fred Dryer, Kate Mulgrew, David Paymer, Christopher Lloyd,Tom Berenger, Leah Remini, Christopher McDonald, Carol Kane, Mike Ditka, Jennifer Tilly, P.J. Lipton Hard Iced Tea

I’m not much of a drinker.  As a matter of fact, I can’t stand beer and usually have a drink once or twice a year.  But I do drink an awful lot of iced tea.  Apparently, Lipton has bugged my phone and made sure I was going to spend this summer indulging in their newest product, Lipton Hard Iced Tea.  Made with real brewed Lipton tea, natural fruit flavors and a triple-filtered, premium malt base, Lipton Hard Iced Tea takes America’s favorite tea and reimagines it as a 5% ABV non-carbonated product. This great tasting and refreshing hard iced tea is launching in four just-sweet-enough flavors that are inspired by Lipton tea fan favorites: Lemon, Peach, Half & Half and Strawberry.

Available in both cans and a highly recommended 12-can variety pack, Lipton Hard Iced Tea is the beverage of both Father’s Day and the summer!
