Kizik Shoes: Men’s Prague

The Kizik Prague might be the most comfortable pair that I own. Featuring durable canvas and genuine suede leather the Prague has quickly become my go-to shoe.

Part of the appeal is that the Kizik shoes feature a patented heel design so all you have to do is slip your toes into the shoe, the heel will compress so your foot can slide all the way in and then once your foot is in, it will spring back into place securing your foot in the shoe. That means no bending over; just slide your foot in and you’re good to go. Extremely comfortable, the Prague is a gift that everyone deserves, not just dad.

Mark T. Wendell Tea Company 68 oz. Mist Iced Tea Jug

Importers of tea for over a century, the Mark T. Wendell Tea Company established itself to an upscale clientele of Boston, New York and Philadelphia. After Wendell’s passing in 1967, the Johnson family purchased the company, with Hartley E. Johnson, joining and taking over the business in 1999. From an initial listing of only 5 teas, including the legendary Hu-Kwa, offerings have expanded to over 80 estate grown specialty teas, signature tea blends, herbal & fruit tisanes. Additional product offerings include various imported packaged tea brands, tea brewing accessories and a wide range of varying styled teapots.

The Mist Iced Tea Jug is perfect for fans of ice tea everywhere. This sturdy borosilicate glass tea jug from For Life is a great way to make 68 ounces of thirst quenching iced tea in minutes. Designed with a detachable stainless steel and silicone push-on-lid, the Mist Ice Tea Jug is easy to use and cleans up fast. The stainless steel infuser basket is comprised of extra-fine holes to allow the tea to circulate efficiently and comes with a handle on top to allow for easy removal of the brewed leaves.

Among the flavors I sampled were Peach Black, Pomegranate, and Green Iced Tea Blend; each more delicious than the last. The Peach Black is a fruity blend of China Congou black tea, peach pieces, colorful marigold petals and natural essence of pure peaches. When brewed and iced, this makes a refreshing iced tea.

The Pomegrante finest Chinese Sencha green tea leaves and blended them with pomegranate pieces and rose petals to create a unique blend. This combination of healthy green tea and antioxidant-rich pomegranate pieces tastes great served hot or iced cold.

The Green Iced Tea Blend blend yields a full, rich flavor with superior clarity. After brewing and allowed to chill, you can garnish with fruit pieces or mint. We prefer it straight, but this base tea turns any flavors you add into the most amazing iced tea you have ever tasted.

A must have if you enjoy hot or, even better, iced tea!

Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition and Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition – Last Call

Writer/artist Darwyn Cooke established himself as one of the comic medium’s greatest storytellers when he died suddenly of lung cancer in 2016. But his legacy will remain through his work. And perhaps no better example of that are his adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker novels. Now, all four of his Parker books have been collected in two tremendous oversized and beautifully designed hardcover editions, each with a slipcover.

The Martini Edition features two novels. In The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loved and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind – to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him. In The Outfit after Parker evens the score with those who betrayed him and recovers the money he was cheated out of from the syndicate, Parker is riding high, living in swank hotels and enjoying the finer things in life again. Until, that is, he’s fingered by a squealer who rats him out to The Outfit for the price they put on his head… and they find out too late that if you push Parker, it better be all the way into the grave. The Martini edition also includes 65-pages of Darwyn Cooke content.

The Martini Edition – Last Call features more than 100 pieces of never-before-seen Parker art by Darwyn Cooke; a round table talk with Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Bruce Timm, and Scott Dunbier on Parker and Cooke; and a brand-new 17-page story by multiple Eisner Award-winning creators Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Included are the novels The Score and Slayground.

It was an impossible crime: knock off an entire town—a huge plant payroll, all the banks, and all the stores—in one night. But there was one thief good enough to try—Parker. In The Score, Parker takes on his biggest job yet. All he needs are the right men, the right plan, and the right kind of help from Lady Luck. But as everyone knows, you can never count on that last one. This chilling caper could either be the perfect crime… or a set-up that would land him in jail — for life.

In Slayground, Parker, whose getaway car crashes after a heist, manages to elude capture with his loot by breaking into an amusement park that is closed for the winter. But his presence does not go unnoticed–a pair of cops observed the job and its aftermath. But rather than pursue their suspect… they decide to go into business for themselves, with the help of some “business associates.” From then on it’s a game of cat and mouse, one played out through closed rides of the abandoned carnival… a game that slowly starts to favor the mouse.

For the father that used to love comics, who now reads crime fiction, these two volumes are among the best of the very best.

RoboCop: 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition

RoboCop, from Orion Pictures, marked director Paul Verhoeven’s Hollywood debut and instantly became an enduring sci-fi/action classic when it landed in theaters in the summer of 1987. Verhoeven’s peerlessly exciting and kinetic visuals were matched by a sharp script, iconic cast and exceptional special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Phil Tippett (The Empire Strikes Back).

Set apart from other genre films by no small part of Verhoeven’s social commentary (which he would also utilize to even greater effect in his film, Starship Troopers), the film takes place in Detroit in the not-too-distant future. Heroic cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is gunned down in the line of duty, only to be resurrected as RoboCop – a cybernetic mix of spare human parts and Motor City steel, and the latest defense against crime designed by the all-powerful OCP Corporation. As RoboCop’s memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above.

Unsurpassably thrilling, unexpectedly moving and unforgettably hilarious in equal measure, the future of law enforcement is back in a definitive 4K Blu-ray presentation packed with hours of bonus features and exclusive collectable packaging. Including both the director’s and theatrical cut, commentaries, interviews, featurettes, deleted scenes, storyboards, production footage, image galleries, trailers and tv spots, isolated score tracks, an SD copy of the television cut of the film, collector’s postcards, double-sided fold-out poster, reversible sleeve and an 80-page Limited Edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Omar Ahmed, Christopher Griffiths and Henry Blyth, a 1987 Fangoria interview with Rob Bottin, and archive publicity materials.

I’d buy this for a dollar!

It’s Alive! by Julian David Stone

In the summer of 1931, life was good for Junior Laemmle. Though only twenty-three years old, he was the head of all movie production for Universal Pictures, and under his reign, the studio flourished. So much so, he was about to be bestowed with the greatest honor a young executive can receive in Hollywood: a promotion to vice president of the entire company. What’s more, Carl Laemmle, his father and founder of the studio, was returning to California for the first time in years to personally present the honor to his son.

Or so Junior thought.

When his father arrives, Junior discovers that instead of being grateful for transforming and catapulting the out-of-date studio into the future, his father is obsessed with Junior’s next production: Frankenstein. Like the year before, Carl is fervently against making another grisly and gothic film, despite Dracula becoming a huge hit―a project which Junior fought for and personally oversaw through production. Also not helping Junior’s cause, though the film is just days away from beginning production, the final choice between Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff to play the role of the Monster, has yet to be made.

The Untouchables: 35th Anniversary Edition 4K UHD

Brian De Palma’s historical gangster drama, loosely adapted from both the original book and the TV series it inspired, is one of the most consistently entertaining films of the ’80s. Even abandoning his trademark themes of obsession and duality (though not entirely, as Eliot Ness certainly grapples with both), De Palma’s finds himself a match with David Mamet’s uniquely gruff voice. Of course, much is made of the train station scene, inarguably the movie’s showstopper and an homage to Eisenstein’s Odessa steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin. And yet it’s also a reference to Sam Peckinpah in its bloodshed and lyrical use of slow motion. And the siege on Malone’s apartment recalls his own opening setpiece from Blow Out, itself reminiscent of Dario Argento’s roaming camera in films such as Tenebrae.

The cast is excellent. I originally thought Kevin Costner was a stiff as Ness, but upon repeat viewings, I realized he’s a great fit as the in over his head boy scout who has to figure out just what he’s prepared to do to get his man. Robert De Niro is having a blast in his reunion with old friend De Palma as a scarily volatile Al Capone. Billy Drago is wonderful as a quietly menacing Frank Nitti.

And filling out the Untouchables, you have Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith as Ness’ more enthusiastic partners, plus Sean Connery in a bravura turn as Jimmy Malone, an honest cop cowed by Chicago corruption but given a chance to stand up thanks to Ness. Sure, he doesn’t care enough to disguise his Scottish accent, but he’s still intense yet warm, both avenging angel and father figure.

Plus, that Ennio Morricone score, a follow-up to Cinema Paradiso in it’s quieter moments, but rousing when it counts. Extras are slight with several featurettes and a trailer.
The Untouchables isn’t the best or most interesting De Palma, but it’s still wonderful and welcome popcorn entertainment from a master filmmaker, and has never looked or sounded better. ( – Andre Bennett)

The Boys: Seasons 1 & 2 Collection Blu-ray

Based on the New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, who also serve as executive producers, and developed by executive producer and showrunner Eric Kripke, The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes—who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians, and as revered as gods—abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. Intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes, The Boys, a group of vigilantes, continue their heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven and Vought—the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets. It’s the seemingly powerless against the super powerful.

As the series progresses, The Boys find themselves on the run from the law,and struggle to fight back against the Superheroes. Meanwhile Vought, the hero management company, cashes in on the panic over Supervillains, and a new hero, Stormfront, shakes up the company and challenges an already unstable Homelander.

Ultra-violent and hysterically funny, The Boys continues to get more addicting and intense with each episode. Extras include deleted and extended scenes, blooper reels, and a short film, Butcher. Featuring an amazing cast which includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Elisabeth Shue, Colby Minifie, Aya Cash, Claudia Doumit, Shantel VanSanten, Shawn Ashmore, Goran Višnjić and Giancarlo Esposito, The Boys is something to be watched, savored, and frequently revisited.

The Haunting of Hill House: Folio Society Edition by Shirley Jackson

Widely considered one of the scariest books ever written, The Haunting of Hill House is the terrifying grandmother of all modern haunted house tales; the ghostly disturbances in this novel have paved the way for countless supernatural menaces, from Stephen King’s The Shining to Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger. Yet Shirley Jackson’s most celebrated novel deals in the bone-deep terror of mental disintegration rather than gore – which is why once you have visited Hill House, you will not forget it.

Inspired by an article about a group of 19th-century psychic researchers, Jackson eventually tracked down just the right building on which to base her haunted house, only to discover it had been built by her own great-great-grandfather … exactly the sort of eerie fact you’d expect to find in a good ghost story. Artist Angie Hoffmeister’s striking binding for this edition has captured the looming presence of the house itself, while her illustrations of the interior are suffused with a cold dread. Page by page, explore the rooms and corridors alongside Eleanor, and decide for yourself: are the terrors all in her mind, or does something truly monstrous stalk the halls of Hill House?

This Folio edition of the definitive work of American Gothic is illustrated by Angie Hoffmeister, who has provided seven exquisitely unnerving images as well as a wraparound binding featuring the house itself. Award-winning novelist Joyce Carol Oates has contributed an in-depth introduction exploring the compelling psychological undercurrents of Jackson’s writing, making this an irresistible addition to any haunted library.

Raiders of the Lost Ark Steelbook 4K Blu-ray

The spirit of classic pulp serials lives on in this wild, funny, scary adventure masterpiece. But you knew that already, Dear Reader, did you not? At any rate, please beware MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD. I’ll admit that I never liked Raiders as much as the other great genre films of the early 80s (Empire Strikes Back, The Road Warrior, Blade Runner, etc.). But the contest is close. Raiders doesn’t pretend to be original, and it doesn’t need to be. Its humor was part of its broad appeal. Harrison Ford was always a drab actor, but he looks terrific with the boots, fedora, jacket, and whip. The whip was a great call. Also great was giving Indy the “fear of snakes” Achilles heel and many moments of vulnerability (“I’m making this up as I go!”). Ever since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, heroes in American films needed to exhibit some kind of weakness.

Setting the film in the 1930s was inspired because (a) the original serials were made in the 1930s, (b) this gives us the chance to have Nazi villains, and (c) many jungles were still unexplored at that time. Most people love the film for the action rather than the style, but viewers should not miss some excellent passing images: the monkey beneath the rotating fan, the snake through the slipper, the burned-out swastika. The climax was quite daring, both from the inclusion of the supernatural and from the surprising gore. The coda confused many people. I felt that it was meant to be vaguely anti-establishment, but also somehow fitting; as the Ark was previously lost and hidden in antiquity, it will now be lost and hidden in modernity.

Packed with an exclusive mini-poster, the 4K print has the film looking better than ever. ( – David E. Goldweber)

The Godfather Trilogy 4K UHD Collection

The Godfather might very well be the greatest American film of all time. Based on a mediocre novel by Mario Puzo, co-writer/director Francis Ford Coppola made an epic story that both made actors Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, and Diane Keaton into stars and revived the career of one of the world’s greatest actors, Marlon Brando, earning him an Academy Award. The Godfather chronicled the epic tale of a 1940s New York Mafia family and their struggle to protect their empire from rival families as the leadership switches from the father to his youngest son.

Two years later, Coppola returned to continuing saga of the Corleone family as they move to Nevada and make the casino business their major income source under the leadership of the increasingly paranoid and malevolent Michael, whose reign as the “Don” is juxtaposed against the parallel tale of his father’s escape from Sicily as a young boy and his subsequent rise to power in New York’s Lower East Side during the turn-of-the-century. With Robert De Niro taking on the role of the young Vito (also winning an Oscar for the role). The film was even more critically acclaimed, winning six Oscars.

Sixteen years later, Coppola returned to his masterpiece in a less positively received third film. Introducing new characters to the franchise, the ensemble included Andy Garcia, Joe Mantegna, George Hamilton, Bridget Fonda, and Sophia Coppola (taking over for an exhausted Winona Ryder).

Michael Corleone, now in his 60s, seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Garcia), but he may also be the spark that turn’s Michael’s hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence. Last year, Coppola re-released the film, his special director’s cut renamed, The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. This version included a new beginning and ending, as well as changes to scenes, shots, and music cues. The resulting project reflects author Mario Puzo and director Francis Ford Coppola’s original intentions for the film.

Newly restored and remastered in Dolby Vision, all three films in the landmark trilogy will be released together with HDR-10 on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time ever. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set will include The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and Coppola’s recently re-edited version of the final film, Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. The disc set includes legacy commentaries by Coppola, as well as access to Digital copies of The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II and Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. In addition, extras are plentiful with both new and previously released content including commentaries, featurettes, interviews and deleted scenes.

An offer you shouldn’t refuse. The Godfather Trilogy is a must have for any cinegeek.

Alligator 4K UHD

Screenwriter John Sayles had traveled this Jaws-inspired territory earlier in Piranha, which I think is slightly superior to Alligator. But Alligator and Piranha both share the spirit of unpretentious B-movie glee, and both include a little social commentary with their humor and gore. Alligator is at least better in one respect: it stars the great Robert Forster as the unshaven cop hero, Detective David Madison. Forster’s low-key sincerity gives Alligator a pathos that Piranha lacks, although Piranha has better rhythm, action, and humor. I also think Piranha handles the gore better, as some of the severed arms and legs in Alligator are plainly gross. Both films employ the old-fashioned monster-movie pattern of depicting a kill early on, showing glimpses of the monster from time to time, having the heroes discover telltale signs of the monster, putting the heroes in conflict with corrupt or ignorant authorities, and finally setting the monster loose at some kind of big festival at the conclusion. Both films, thanks to Sayles, are very good at foreshadowing and at setting amusing patterns in the narrative. An obvious example: the gator’s name is Ramon, and in Madison’s apartment are posters of Ramon Santiago paintings.

Alligator is presented in two versions: Theatrical Cut (90:50), and a Television Version (98:05), which is offered on Blu-ray only. The latter uses an interpositive to source the new footage. Extras include commentary, featurettes, still galleries, deleted scenes, trailers and tv spots.

In an interview with John Sayles included on the disc the writer revealed that he felt Alligator was primarily a monster movie but that the gator was also symbolic of social problems that get neglected until they reach the upper classes, hence the climactic pandemonium at the pharmaceutical maven’s estate. Overall, a fun imitation of Jaws. (– David E. Goldweber)

An American Werewolf in London Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD

Two landmark werewolf films – this one and The Howling – were released in 1981. The stories were completely different, but the sensibilities were similar. Each mixed camp with horror, each included multiple references to classic werewolf films, each even included snippets of porn films (yeah, 1981 was a weird time) within the larger narrative. Most importantly, each featured a jaw-dropping man-to-wolf transformation. The Howling had multiple shorter transformation scenes, while American Werewolf had a single extended one. Fans enjoy debating which effects are superior. I vote for American Werewolf, as did the Academy Awards, but it’s a close call. I also think American Werewolf the superior film overall, but just barely. The developed characters, and the wonderful performances by David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, and Jenny Agutter give it a slight edge. John Woodvine is also excellent as Dr. Hirsch, who sees something suspicious and decides to investigate on his own.

Aside from the incredible transformation sequence courtesy of Rick Baker, American Werewolf is also famous for its perfect blending of comedy and horror. The Howling is also funny, but it’s rarely as intense or frightening as American Werewolf ; it is also more outlandish and less believable. American Werewolf is funny, but the humor comes across as incidental, almost unconscious, quite different from the “nudge nudge wink wink” insider jokes of The Howling. This was not the first film to blend humor and horror (you can trace that back to the haunted house comedies of the 1920s) but it reinvented this blend for a new generation. Critics at first felt the film was neither funny enough nor scary enough, but audiences praised it, and as years went by the critics rectified their mistakes.

The film feels like it was made with great confidence. Writer-director John Landis made some gutsy decisions in scoring gore sequences with pop songs, in filming the transformation in bright light (no shadows, no time-lapse), in giving us a Jewish werewolf, in making it a four-legged creature rather than two, in filming on location at Piccadilly Circus for the chaotic conclusion. All these moves paid off. Perhaps most impressive is the attention given to the mental transformation, not just the physical. Our hapless hero David is bitten toward the beginning of the film, but before he becomes a wolf for the first time, he is plagued by nightmares that presage his fate. And how will he feel when he changes? Is it a euphoric joy? Or a wracking pain? And what happens afterwards? Will he remember the killings? Will he try to kill himself? His dead friend seems to visit him in the form of a rotting zombie. Is this a real zombie? Or is it a projected aspect of David’s own mind trying to tell him an uncomfortable truth?

The 4K Ultra HD sounds and looks fantastic and features a plethora of extras for fans of the film including commentary, two full length documentaries, interviews, video essay, featurettes, outtakes, original trailer and teaser plus TV and radio spots, extensive image gallery featuring over 200 stills, posters and other ephemera, a double-sided fold-out poster, six double-sided, postcard-sized lobby card reproductions, and a limited edition 60-page, perfect-bound book featuring new writing by Craig Ian Mann and Simon Ward, archival articles and original reviews.

Forty one years later, An American Werewolf In London is as effective today as it was when it was first released. (– David E. Goldweber)
