‘Suicide Squad #1’ (review)

Well, this is an interesting take on the Suicide Squad.

I am honestly not sure how I feel about it after reading this first issue. There are a lot of changes to the team and it is a bit jarring. I will give it time to see where it goes but honestly, I am left with a lot of questions after the last page.

So, basically this book features a brand new team on the Suicide Squad. Amanda Waller is still in charge but there is a new team leader. It is Peacemaker, who is seemingly an odd fit. DC must be trying to reflect the upcoming film and television series coming out.

Waller and Peacemaker have an interesting dynamic here.

The rest of the new group are comprised of a bunch of C-listers. Waller wants Peacemaker and Task Force X to find and recruit a new member for the group.

The person Waller wants is Talon from the Court of Owls.

From there, the team tries to track him down.

This is easier said than done. Conflict arises. There is a a big fight. In it, there are some nice moments and some extremely funny ones(Waller tries to recruit Superboy in one scene).

It’s not bad but it does feel a bit off.

The script by Robbie Thompson is pretty okay. It seems like he really wants to get away from previous versions, and the results don’t always land. The art isn’t bad. Pansica is a capable artist. I will definitely be reading it, but I am not crazy with excitement for it just yet.
