Its been awhile since we have seen the Bendis version of Superman hit the stands. It took me a while to remember just what was happening. And then I opened it up and read the first few pages and I was annoyed. Maybe we should have used this opportunity to start things fresh.
The opening scene has Connor Kent having a “confessional” moment in the Fortress of Solitude.
Superman is there listening for clues to help Connor and to determine if a threat is on it’s way. It just gets more and more boring from there. Reading it is like watching paint dry.
Braniac makes a sudden appearance. It is a more than a bit jarring. Then, Bendis takes us to the Daily Planet where Perry White has his staff working on something big! This scene is dull too and it doesn’t advance the story too much.
We get to see Superman’s villains involved in a scheme. We then see Clark and gang visit the Kent farm.
Finally, we get a cliffhanger with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson that just doesn’t add up to much yet again. This leads to a bigger problem with the issue.
The problem is that I had a real hard time keeping focused or even interested in the happenings of this book. John Romita Jr. on the art can’t even save this book. It is an unfortunate mess of a comic series at this point.
