This is another interesting comic book from the Brian Michael Bendis factory.
The first issue drew me right back into the world of the original series. It was whip smart and fast and just plain awesome.
Bendis and Oeming start off things quickly here and don’t let up for a second!
The previous issue focused on newly made man Valentine Gallo and mob hitwoman Jagger Rose and about the battle they are fighting with each other.
This issue starts with a nearly wordless nine page scene at the Brooklyn Community Center. This has Jagger Rose fighting and taking down an adversary. It’s a brutal scene that is handled with style by Oeming.
This follows with a flashback to one month earlier where Jagger Rose takes on a job from the Don. She has to take out somebody working for the Don. This person is stealing from him. This leads her into an even bigger plot that she was not expecting at all.
You see, it turns out the person that she was sent to kill is her Uncle Jake. They have an emotional scene. Bendis shows off his skill as a writer here. It’s a wonderfully dark and poignant scene. It also deepens Jagger’s character and give her more shades.
The ending is a nice lead in to next issue.
Jagger has had it and has an offer. It seems at the end like she is going to take it. I’m excited to see what the team does from here.
Bendis and Oeming are at the top of their game. This series might even be better than the original. Time will tell but it looks likely indeed.
