Prevues of Coming Attractions: Super Bowl Edition

As a non-sports fan, the only appeal of watching the Super Bowl were the commercials.

Now, years later, thankfully, I can watch them on YouTube without having to sit through four hours of filler.

Here’s what movie/tv trailers premiered during the game (and one this morning) and my thoughts…

Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer

The teaser last night was the very first look we’ve gotten at this much anticipated Star Wars installment that has been rumored to be a disaster by the studio’s own admission.  I’ve included both the Super Bowl teaser and the trailer released this morning since they both offer different footage.

To be honest, they accomplish the goal.  I’m curious, which I wasn’t before.  This “feels” like Star Wars and Alden Ehrenreich does a full Chris Pine, not imitating Harrison Ford, but doing a pretty good job capturing the essence of Han Solo.  (It’s harder to determine anything about Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian since we don’t see him deliver any lines, but he looks the part).

And best of all, it doesn’t look much of a Ron Howard movie.

Avengers: Infinity War Commercial

A few seconds of new footage, but this continues to look underwhelming.  Despite their box office success, I find several of the Marvel films bordering on unwatchable, and although the Russo Brothers directed my favorite Marvel film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, overall their cinematic work looks better suited for television than cinema.  Nevertheless, I hope it’s amazing and that this 20 film Thanos tease actually pays off.

Westworld Season 2 Super Bowl Ad

Succeeds instantly.  Visually stunning and makes you want to watch it immediately.

Skyscraper Big Game Ad

Dwayne Johnson goes all John McClane in this take on “Die Hard in a Skyscraper.”

Wait, that’s Die Hard.  Johnson continues to be one of the most self-aware movie stars and I’m predicting this will be the box office sleeper hit of the summer.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout Trailer

From a NOC list to “The Rabbit’s Foot” to the bioweapon Chimera to “Ghost Protocol” to combating The Syndicate, Ethan Hunt and his Impossible Missions Force have chosen to take every mission handed to them.  Now, new questions are raised and familiar faces appear in the new trailer.  Crazy or not, Cruise continues to be a movie star and with Christopher McQuarrie at the helm for a second time, this franchise shows no sign of slowing down.

Red Sparrow Commercial

This is the Black Widow movie that Marvel should have made already, but you already knew that.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Trailer #2

After the events of the previous films, wouldn’t you imagine that raising money to build theme parks and genetically manipulate DNA to create new breeds of monsters would be tough?  Apparently, they found a way.  The lack of Goldblum in this trailer unfortunately suggests that his role might be little more than a cameo.

A Quiet Place Big Game Spot

Between this and the original trailer, I’m intrigued.  I hope it’s good.

The Cloverfield Paradox commercial

Now on Netflix.  That was quick.

What are your thoughts of the trailers/commercials?
