First-Ever Illustrated Edition of ‘The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet’ Publishes Jan. 25th

The Folio Society will release the first-ever illustrated edition of the groundbreaking novel The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet on January 25, 2024. Limited to 750 hand- numbered and signed copies and illustrated by the award-winning Zoë van Dijk, the edition will see Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers’ debut work come to life in truly galactic fashion.

Celebrating 10 years since its first publication, the novel was initially funded via Kickstarter and became the first self-published novel to be nominated by British speculative fiction awards, The Kitschies. It has gone on to become a best-selling first volume in a series that has won both Hugo and Prix Julia Verlanger awards.

Marking its incredible journey and pivotal role in the evolution of science fiction, The Folio Society’s limited run will champion the astronomical novel with a presentation box adorned with a field of stars and spacecraft, a printed cloth binding, artist-designed endpapers, a limitation ‘envelope’, and neon- soaked artworks, including an exclusive print, that perfectly capture the novel’s contrasting and spectacular world.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is both a crucial waypoint in the collection of any sci-fi connoisseur and the perfect gateway for literary explorers new to the genre. Packed full of adventure in far-off corners of the galaxy, the story follows Rosemary Harper as she joins the crew of the Wayfarer, a spaceship packed with varied species and personalities. When the crew are offered the job of a lifetime that will see them endure a long trip through war-torn interstellar space, they soon find out that while space may be vast; spaceships are very small indeed.

Becky Chambers said:  ‘I know it’s the nature of promotional materials to be hyperbolic, so I need you to understand – I’m being thoroughly, utterly, hand-on-a-stack-of-stardust honest here. These illustrations look like the inside of my own head.’

A beloved debut with a back story as brilliant as that within its pages,
