Soundies: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray

Soundies have been called the music videos of the 1940s, but that doesn’t begin to describe their cultural importance. It’s true that they feature a remarkable range of talent, from big-band luminaries like Duke Ellington and Count Basie to then-emerging stars like Doris Day and Ricardo Montalban, and lesser-known artists of the American nightclub circuit. But Soundies are also a rich, largely overlooked chronicle of American popular culture during and just after World War II. Produced for coin-operated jukeboxes in neighborhood bars and taverns, Soundies have an uncanny way of revealing what Americans were thinking about topics that weren’t discussed openly, from sexuality to ethnicity and race.

Curated by Susan Delson, author of Soundies and the Changing Image of Black Americans on Screen: One Dime at a Time, this four-disc collection presents a diverse sampling of 200 shorts—jazz, country-western, folk, and the boogie woogie roots of rock ’n’ roll—newly restored from 35mm and 16mm materials preserved by the Library of Congress and other archives. Never have so many Soundies been celebrated in one collection, or presented with such care: thematically organized, accompanied by on-screen introductions and a booklet of essays, photos, and credits.

But as the stakes grow higher, will Chance’s dark obsession with vengeance destroy him? The ultimate ’80s neo-noir, To Live and Die in L.A. features John Pankow, Debra Feuer, John Turturro, Darlanne Fluegel and Dean Stockwell, with cinematography by Robby Müller (Paris, Texas) that captures the City of Angels from the trendy elegance of Rodeo Drive to the seedy, neon glow of Hollywood.  Extras include commentary, interviews, documentary, deleted scene and alternate ending with introductions, radio spot and trailer.

Babylon 5: The Complete Series Blu-ray

Creator J. Michael Straczynski’s ambitious and complex futuristic space opera charts five years in the lives of those aboard the titular five-mile-long space station, where personal drama plays out against a tense political backdrop of looming war between bitter enemies the Centauri and the Narn.  The main Babylon 5 story arc occurs between the years 2257 and 2262. The show depicts a future where Earth has a unified Earth government and has gained the technology for faster-than-light travel using ‘jump gates’, a kind of wormhole technology allowing transport through the alternate dimension of hyperspace.

Prominent story arcs comprised internal strife within races, conflicts and repercussions of wars between different races, and involvement in a recurring thousand-year conflict among ancient civilizations. The human characters played a crucial role, particularly as central figures in the fight against Earth’s slide into totalitarianism.  Numerous episodes delved into the impact of overarching events on individual characters, exploring themes like personal transformation, grief, oppression, corruption, and the quest for redemption. The set includes all 110 episodes all featuring remastered special effects.

Violent Night 4K UHD

An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage inside. However, they aren’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (David Harbour) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.

Harbour plays the real Santa Claus, but in a way that we’ve never seen him before, as a protector and a warrior with some serious skills. After hundreds of years spreading holiday cheer and disheartened with a fading public belief in Christmas magic, Santa is ready to hang up his boots. But on this Christmas Eve, when he enters the Lightstone home and realizes a little girl Trudy (Leah Brady) and her family are in danger, Santa realizes there are still some on the Nice List worth fighting for. It turns out that before Santa donned the jolly red suit and hitched up the reindeer, he had a very different life – a history that’s about to make him the ideal protector for this exact moment.  Scrooge (John Leguizamo) is the leader of the team of mercenaries who break into the Lightstone family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage. He’s cunning and scrappy and is forced to face off against a surprise opponent: Santa Claus.

Gertrude Lightstone (Beverly D’Angelo) is the matriarch of the highly affluent, semi-toxic Lightstone family, whose wealth is the target of Scrooge and his Christmas plot. She’s a tough-as-nails businesswoman and what you would call a ballbreaker. Jason (Alex Hassell) is the son of Gertrude Lightstone. Jason has recently become estranged from his wife, Linda, and desperately wants to restore his relationship with her and maintain his relationship with their daughter, Trudy. Jason’s relationship with his mother Gertrude is strained, which becomes even more highlighted when the family comes together for Christmas. Linda (Alexis Louder) is Jason Lightstone’s estranged wife and Trudy’s mother. Linda wants her family to be together, but there have been some obstacles that have hindered her marriage with Jason and their family dynamic. While Linda loves all of Jason’s quirks, she knows there are outside forces that make him unreliable. For both Linda and Jason, their daughter Trudy is their top priority.  Trudy (Brady) is Jason and Linda’s 7-year-old daughter, and her only Christmas wish is that her parents will reconcile and get back together. When a team of mercenaries invades the Lightstone home, Trudy calls on Santa for help and reinvigorates Santa because she believes in him more than he thought anyone did anymore.

Welcome to your new favorite Christmas movie! Extras include deleted and extended scenes, featurettes, and commentary.
