This is a book that I unexpectedly loved.
I hadn’t heard about it until I saw it advertised at the San Diego Comic Con this year and it definitely made me interested. It is a bit all over the place, but I have to say it is just a lot of fun.
It reminds me of a Mad Magazine sketch that just goes completely out of control and doesn’t stop.
The book is a collection of three previously published one shots that Image Comic put out. They are all fun and a bit scattershot in their own ways.
Scotch McTiernan is a soldier and it is funny how the writers use his character to make some true commentary about today’s world and the people in it.
There is no real character development in this book which makes it hard to get into at times. Scotch McTiernan is the centerpiece character. All of the characters are there to basically there so he can bounce off of, and say things that are as offensive as humanly possible.
The best chapter of the book is the one focusing on a Halloween Party. That one seems the most focused and the one that the creative team seems to have the most fun with. The jokes fly off pretty fast in the other chapters for the most part. But in the Halloween Party story, the creators seem to pack a bit more punch it in.
Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn are basically writing in as many jokes as they can per page. Sometimes it really does. Oftentimes, it doesn’t too. But that’s okay. They put enough in there to get by. The artwork by Scott Koblish fits perfectly.
He did an awesome job making the characters do the most ridiculous things with a straight face. It is a decent book, overall.
