This is a book with a great concept. I could easily see it being a strong movie as it has a perfect, self contained story. I do have to say that this could have been a lot better if it was fleshed out more.
I want to be clear that I enjoyed every page. It just feels like another two issues would have given this story room to grow.
I enjoyed the set up very much: The story concerns a group of fans who love comics. They are all pretty mad that a movie star named Maisie Wade is ruining their favorite comic book character, the Red Rogue.
How is she ruining it?
Well, she’s in a television show about the character that isn’t true to the comic they all love!
This group of friends decide to do the only thing they can think of. They decide to break into Maisie Wade’s million dollar house and steal her precious first appearance of Red Rogue comic book that’s valuable. It is a lot of fun watching these fanboys concoct their plan in the first chapter of this book.
The remaining three chapters are dedicated to learning about Maisie Wade.
We see that she actually agrees with the fans and hates the Red Rogue television show she is starring in. We get to see the price of fame, where everyone is always mad at you, no matter what you do.
We also see that Maisie quit that television show as it doesn’t look anything like the comic book. She decides to go for a night on the town with her significant other. Then, when she comes back home, she can see that her house is being robbed by the fanboys we were talking about earlier.
The whole thing turns into a Red Rogue comic book.
Maisie eventually even has to don the Red Rogue costume.
It is a blast to see of all this. But again, it all gets resolved so quickly that the stakes fell short. The writing is very good and the artwork is fantastic but it needed space to have more exploration.
As soon as this started really getting going?
It was over. There was so much more that could have done and more moments and story to be mined.
