Geoff Johns is having a little DC renaissance for himself these days.
He is back writing the Justice Society of America and he is interweaving some pretty interesting stories. He is also back writing Stargirl, after completing his work on the television series. This story is actually pretty good and it is a heck of a lot of fun.
This comic features Courtney Whitmore on a new adventure as Stargirl.
Courtney notices that Red Arrow has gone missing. She decides to track down the missing hero.
While she is doing so, she stumbles across an even bigger mystery. It seems that there have been a bunch of missing sidekicks from the Golden Age that have collectively disappeared recently.
Courtney decides to take it upon herself to find them.
This leads her to an island in the middle of nowhere. The island is a scary place and she starts to slowly decipher what is really happening here. Courtney then discovers these heroes and that they have been captured here against their will.
Being Stargirl, she has to find a way to help free them. But that may come at a cost.
Courtney also discovers why they have been kidnapped. There is a villain that thinks that the sidekicks hold no value and must be eliminated from the timeline. This all leads up to a big fight at the end where Stargirl is fighting for the sidekicks and their very existence. It is a bit of a surprise too when we find out who the antagonist is.
Johns does a great job here. He has an affinity for these Golden Age characters and it shows on every page. His script is exciting, funny, and full of adventure. The art by Nauck is some of his best. He captures each character perfectly and the action is fast and clear. He and Johns work well together.
I hope they do another Stargirl series. This was very well done.
