What happens when you have a B-movie star writing a comic book about the Army of the Dead?
You get a B-movie story.
Basically, the book takes place at the end of World War II and it features the famous Sgt. Rock character in a whole new set of circumstances.
The book is about Nazis and these weird experiments that they are doing. Needless to say, these experiments end up having the dead walk the earth. This turns the book into a horror book pretty quickly. It is a fun concept for sure.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t go further than that.
The opening sequence is pretty brutal to be fair. Then, we are catapulted into the plot of the book.
As a writer, Bruce Campbell has a pretty sparse style. His dialogue is pretty great. His character work is definitely not. It is hard to grasp onto any of the characters or care about them in any meaningful sort of way.
It is a little bit of a disappointment as I love Sgt. Rock.
Here, the character comes off as a sketch of a character instead. The rest of the cast are barely identifiable. So, when the action scenes happen, you hardly care what happens. You also can hardly tell people apart.
Still, the action scenes all are well composed as well as all of the horror elements of the book.
Eduardo Risso and his art make these things stand out. He does a great job of making this book unique. There are a few nice moments, and the end is truly a lot of fun. The covers by Gary Frank are really nice. I just wish the whole thing had a bit more meat on its bones, to say the least.
