The Ghost of Wreckers Cove is an all-ages supernatural mystery translated, apparently, from the Spanish. Angelica Del Campo and Liniers are the creators and creative indeed, they are.
Without even a trace of anything inappropriate, this pair has crafted a legitimately exciting adventure with much more heart and character development than one finds in months of most mainstream comic books these days.
Our heroines are the young and somewhat “boyish” Cristina and her little sister, Martha. As our story opens, they’ve just lost their mother and their well-meaning, but somewhat clueless father is dealing with it by moving them to a very small town in Maine where they will live directly across from a lighthouse that hasn’t been used in a century.
Martha is excited, but Cristina is a city girl and royally ticked that there’s no wi-fi reception!
Soon, on the beach, the sisters meet a young, red-haired woman who says her name is Ida.
Martha can’t help but notice that Ida has no feet and decides she’s a ghost. Her more pragmatic sibling takes a little convincing but ultimately, they realize it’s the only answer and they set out to solve the mystery of who she is, what happened to her, and just why the lighthouse has sat without a light for so long.
This is one of those books with deceptively simple artwork that, in reality, is all kinds of cool, utilizing the artist’s storytelling tricks to full advantage to play up the characters’ moods and emotions. What conflict there is comes from realistic family relationships and is always firmly underlined with an obvious love.
Reminiscent of a good Disney TV-movie of the 1970s, The Ghost of Wreckers Cove offers plenty of thrills without scares, and mystery without violence. It’s not short, but it’s a quick read because you just don’t want to leave it.
And that’s me talking at age 64!
Imagine a 10-year-old reading this, or a 5-year-old having it read to her…preferably by her sister!
