When considering the achievements of the characters who comprise The Fantastic Four, Marvel Comics first family, The Thing, can easily be considered the odd superhero out.
The Thing lacks Human Torch’s charm, The Invisible Woman’s courage and Mr. Fantastic’s intellect. In fact, The Thing is the only member of the foursome who cannot hide in plain sight.
Yet, it is those differences that make The Next Big Thing, a limited series written by Walter Mosely, such a refreshing read.
Mosely embraces the lovable loser moniker that The Thing often occupies and spins a yarn filled with cosmic magic worthy of a Fantastic Four tale. The story kicks off with a bit of mystery. Death in the form of Mot is a central character.
There are other mysteries that unfold and a few more guest appearances to hold your interest, but this is an old fashioned adventure that spans the cosmos and twists the fabric of reality.
Tom Reilly’s artwork is a perfect companion to Mosley composition. It’s like reading a comic from the 60s with a more modernized tone. There are plenty of smash moments that place The Thing on par with the best of our brute strength heroes.
However, what Mosley does best is humanize The Thing while simultaneously elevating him. The Thing is far from the one note character with anger issues. He has the charm, intellect and courage to save the world over and over again.
Yes, the writing is on point. The artwork is equally captivating.
As a limited Marvel series, The Next Big Thing lives up to its title. Place it on your must read list.
