‘Lucky Devil’ TPB (review)

Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Fran Galan
Published by Dark Horse Comics

The trade paperback collection of, Lucky Devil,  brings us Cullen Bunn and Fran Galan’s unique tale of demonic forces.

A man named Stanley finds himself possessed by a devil and is able to get it exorcised, but due to some mistakes made during the process, Stanley keeps the demonic powers (while being himself) and the demon hangs around (powerless, but quite upset).

This leads to Stanley basically starting a movement thanks to his powers where he finds himself gaining followers as a front man of sorts for a religion/movement that attracts those mad about religion, heaven/hell, and so forth.

This leads to all kinds of mayhem, obviously.

Stanley is a sympathetically pitiful figure at first and you as the reader somewhat understand just how hard it must be for a regular person to have so much power suddenly and be a bit scared of it–but also excited. Some of the supporting characters feel a bit underdeveloped (like a new girlfriend Stanley has once he starts showcasing his powers),  but if we get a sequel series (as seems hinted at as quite possible) that could be resolved.

Lucky Devil, is a fun mix of horror and comedy thanks to the characterization and stellar artwork. Bunn and Galan don’t shy away from how brutal and nasty demonic creatures and the powers they hold can be but also put a lot of humor into the story. One funny element is how even Hell-creatures find themselves victims to rules, bureaucracy, and the like. If you’re looking for a comic that marries silly and creepy elements with skill then, Lucky Devil is a book worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars.
