I love movie soundtracks. When a director has a good ear for music and how to utilize it in a scene, it’s something I really respond to. Few can rock a better needle drop in cinema than masters like Tarantino or Scorsese, and Edgar Wright and James Gunn are no slouches in this department either.
When I was writing Zii and the Troublemakers, I tried to think of it in terms of a movie. And as this story is about a band on tour, it deserved its own soundtrack just as any movie does. The soundtrack needed to be worthy of the band. It needed to capture their sound and their energy, as well as sound like songs you might hear this Canadian trio from Montreal cover during a show. When selecting the songs, I pulled from the band’s own inspirations. Zii lists them off at one point in the story, and many of these groups Zii has sported their logos on her shirts over the years in Menage a 3, the web comic that Zii and the Troublemakers spins out of. I even listened to a lot of these groups while I was writing the story to get me into the right headspace. Many of these groups I grew up listening to, and others are favorites of Gisele Lagace, the artist and creator behind Pixie Trix Comix, who invited me to come play in this world.
Of course the comic and the playlist can be enjoyed separately, but for a different experience, the soundtrack was curated to be played in the background while enjoying reading Zii and the Troublemakers.
