‘Kang The Conqueror #2’ (review)

Written by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing
Art by Carlos Magno
Published by Marvel Comics

Issue #2 of Kang the Conqueror has taken quite a turn. Sides are declared. Alliances are formed.

But the action is a little lackluster.

The previous issue ended with teen Kang the Conqueror, aka Nathaniel Richards, dropped into Ancient Egypt, the 95th year of the 4th dynasty to be exact.

Our young conqueror comes face to face with his more vicious variant Kang, Rama-Tut, a self proclaimed Pharaoh.

With such a compelling and evenly paced opening act in Chapter 1, this issue is a bit of a letdown.

Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly get too bogged down in exposition when more action is needed.

From this vantage point, Nathaniel is getting schooled by his variants Kang. Rama-Tut provides him with lessons of ruthlessness. The Pharaoh also educates our Nathaniel in the theater of war.

Carlos Magos illustrates the battle sequences skillfully.

And while more time should have been spent soaking in the culture of the 4th dynasty of Egypt, the richness of the artwork cannot be denied.

A few guest Marvel characters are also introduced.

The results are mixed but gives one hopes that the action is about to pick up in Issue #3
