Trippy. Issue #2 gets trippy psychedelic. A drop of acid has nothing on the colors and landscapes created in this issue. It is a black light’s dream.
The artwork explodes, a fitting choice since this chapter, “The Sixth Cosmos: Judgement”, features the mother of Galactus, Taaia. Her entrance was indeed fierce and fitting for the mother of a cosmic entity.
Other than being strong, smart and a woman of science not much is known about Taaia. Her talents, however, have definitely caught the attention of Doctor Strange and the rest of the Defenders. She is certainly on track of becoming a de facto member of the team.
In addition to learning more about Galactus’ lineage, the power cosmic reigns supreme as the story quickly turns into a Silver Surfer showcase. He is even forced to make an impossible choice that will shape the fabric of the universe.
As a writer Al Ewing hits all the right notes with his characterization of the Silver Surfer. Sometimes The Surfer’s moral code can be a little heavy. Narrating this chapter from The Silver Surfer’s point of view was a great storytelling decision.
You can feel The Silver Surfer’s burden as he is tempted to change history and break the same laws he had been asked to protect.
Also the final battle between The Silver Surfer and Carlo Zota is well staged. Like watching two supernovas collid, it was a spectacle of radiant beauty and violence.
All in all, it’s another solid chapter to this strange saga. Let the time chase continue
