‘X-Men #2’ (review)

Written by Gerry Duggan

Published by Marvel Comics

Uh oh, the X-Men’s ability to resurrect their fellow mutants back from the dead is starting to become their worst kept secret. At least that is what appears to be one of the overarching themes of this series thus far. The X-Men are under fire for sure.

The action of issue two begins with a little comic relief between Gambit and Rogue. I am really digging life in the treehouse.  Apparently, poker night is a thing among mutants and cosmic radiated heroes. Never get between a mutant’s card game. It is a charming scene. Especially since what follows is a heavier topic.

It is not easy being a mind reader. The challenges of being an omega-level mutant are real. Powers left unchecked can become the path to madness.

Many X writers have expounded on the trauma one experiences from feeling the thoughts of millions of people simultaneously. However, Duggan’s take is rather refreshing and adds to the character development of the team.

Ms.Marvel is the master teacher. Synch is her student. Hopefully, future issues will dig further into his backstory.

Back to the main story of this issue. It seems like our X-Men will be very busy facing off extinction level events in many more issues to come, courtesy of wagers being made on Gameworld.

Betting against the X-Men is always ill-advised, especially when you have Sunfire, the nova powered mutant, on your squad. I could feel the flames from this issue.

As a self-contained story, Duggan’s plot was easy to follow and the dialogue entertaining.

The clock is ticking. I am curious to see when this series will move from average to extraordinary.
