Huzzah! Wonder Woman has returned to Earth!
And she has Siegfried and Ratatosk along for the ride as they continue their mission to stop future-facing Janus from using the God Scraper to erase all of reality.
So Wonder Woman takes her Asgardian companions to the Hall of Justice, and things are looking a little … different?
The statues of Justice League members in the background of the panels are looking quite feminine for the heroes who aren’t women, aren’t they?
Ah, but that’s no bother.
Miss Martian has arrived to greet the travelers.
But wait, she says she is Marsha, not M’gann M’orrz.
And soon we see Batwoman, Superwoman and so on.
Diana’s on Earth-11, the gender-swapped version of her reality!
And that explains why one statue is of a man, dressed in garb similar to Diana’s. But the statue’s head is lobbed off? Soon we learn that was the statue of Dane of Elysium, an immortal race of superpowered men living in isolation, who instead of seeking to save woman’s world, had come to overthrow it as a self-perceived liberator Wonder Man.
Well, then.
So why have Diana, Siegfried and Ratatosk wound up in this plane of the multiverse instead of Diana’s own Earth? Janus must be here, too! She is, and she lets Dane loose from his prison.
Thus the action gets hot and heavy, as the Justice Guild first fights to contain Dane, and then have to reckon with Janus. Lucky for them, Wonder Woman the indefatigable warrior is among them.
Much credit to the creative team for depicting this epic battle inside the Hall of Justice with what felt like real stakes once Janus appears. It felt like Janus could kill all of them with every stroke of the God Scraper. The panel work, posing and angles convey the action sharply.
And the heart depicted, as Siegfried and Diana’s relationship develops further, also maintains a level of equality between the two as warriors, lovers, and compassionate people who never feel better than when protecting the innocent.
I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
