If you are looking for a refreshed vision of familiar marvel characters check out Amazing Fantasy #1. This issue is more of a table setting story and just scratches the surface of which heroes will be involved, but it’s a fun read.
We have Captain America, The Black Widow and Spider-Man.
Each hero is introduced close to their well known origin story. Cap is a soldier fighting in World War II missions. The Black Widow is a Russian operative in training. And, Spider-Man is in the early phase of his web slinging career.
At first glance author/illustrator, Kaare Kyle Andrews, seems less interested in revealing the fantastic elements of his tale. That quickly changes as our major characters are plucked from their current state environments and are transported to a world not of this earth.
To me, the world they travel to feels closer to the rich landscapes and characters you would find in an issue of The Savage Sword of Conan or Heavy Metal. Yes, you will witness Captain America with a battle axe in hand and riding a giant winged lion. It’s an improved look for our star spangled boy in blue.
Anderson nails the personalities of the major characters with great accuracy. Spidey provides comic relief. The Black Widow shows off her stealth. Cap illustrates the supreme optimism of America’s favorite patriot.
The strength of the story thus far is reading how the characters respond once they are placed in an unknown setting. The situations they encounter are so bizarre, so far off their normal heroic brand, it captured my interest.
This issue tells you who and whets your appetite to learn about the what and why. It is off to a good start.
