‘Supernatural: The Complete Series’ Blu-ray (review)

“When they were boys, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. Subsequently, their father raised them to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America … and he taught them how to kill it. Now, the Winchester brothers crisscross the country in their ’67 Chevy Impala, battling every kind of supernatural threat they encounter along the way.”

That was the original description for Supernatural, which ran for fifteen seasons over two networks, with a total of 327 episode with Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, respectively.

Created by Eric Kripke, the series not only created a large and devoted following, but also developed a fully immersive environment.  Unlike most genre properties, attempts to bring Supernatural to other media were surprisingly forgotten, including novels, comics, and an anime series (which to be honest I was a little surprised to see that it wasn’t included in this set).

With a large ensemble cast, the series included Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard, Jim Beaver, Alexander Calvert, Mark Pellegrino, Samantha Smith, and Ruth Connell among others; as well as number of genre vets including Curtis Armstrong, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Felicia Day, Keith Szarabajka, Mitch Pileggi, Kurt Fuller, Alaina Huffman, Courtney Ford, Katie Cassidy, Lauren Cohan, DJ Qualls, Tahmoh Penikett, Steven Williams, Adrianne Palicki, Kathryn Newton, Sterling K. Brown, Corin Nemec, Rick Springfield, Amber Benson, and Aldis Hodge.

The limited-edition collector’s box set neatly packages the entire series and each season’s respective special features across 57 Blu-ray discs, and also includes an extra bonus disc that contains brand new special features for the final season, including a gag reel, deleted scenes, and the “Long Way Home” retrospective episode, amongst other things.

Also included is a 68-page Collectible Book filled with never-before-seen images from the series’ run, along with set designs and letters addressed to the massive Supernatural fanbase from both show creator Eric Kripke and executive producer Robert Singer. As an added bonus, the book also contains the ultimate fan playlist, spotlighting 37 Dean Winchester-approved rock-and-roll tracks that were featured prominently during the series’ run.

One other additional bonus is a Digital HD code (redeemable on Vudu) for the complete series.

Supernatural is the longest running science fiction series in U.S. television history (and second worldwide after Doctor Who), and this amazing box set is the perfect way for an old-time fan to binge it again or for the new viewer to drop into the world of the Winchester brothers.

Housed in a sturdy outer box, the set is a dream come true, and a must-have for any television genre fan.

Highest recommendation.

Supernatural: The Complete Series will be available on Blu-ray & DVD
on May 25th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
