Things have gone from bad to worse for the girls of Proctor Valley Road.
It’s not just parents and principals wanting to know about their role in the disappearance of their classmates Skip, Robert, and Bruce. Now the police are involved.
In typical fashion, though, August, Cora, Rylee, and Jennie leave them with frustration rather than answers.
August’s blatant truth about taking the boys on a spook tour startles the cops. Cora’s assurance that the boys walked off is met with incredulity. Rylee’s morbid fascination with execution leaves them a bit rattled.
And Jennie isn’t about to be pushed around by these cops with no actual motive.
It’s not just the police who are after the girls, though. When they gather at the junkyard to talk about their next practical steps, they instead find themselves sporting mysterious glyphs on their bodies. Something supernatural is coming for them too.
Still, they know that they need to go back and look for the boys they left behind. August is all for going immediately, but Cora, Rylee, and Jennie know it’s going to require more planning and preparation for this kind of search.
August is undeterred. Gathering her own supplies, she sets out alone to find the boys without letting her friends know. She’s determined to get to the bottom of this–and maybe make a little money selling their story after it’s over.
There’s a lot more in the desert than August bargained for, though. Unexpected seaweed, the half-burnt corpse of Skip, bipedal hyenas–there’s something more than just boys wandering off going on out here. It’s more than she’s prepared to handle, for sure.
Thank goodness August’s friends heeded their intuitions that August was in trouble. They come rolling up in Jennie’s VW Bus ready to take on whatever is waiting for them.
Or so they thought. August’s wounds squelch. Rylee is seeing double. Jennie vomits something toxic. Cora can’t make the bells ringing in her ears stop. They don’t know what’s going on, but they are in over their heads.
And those glyphs that appeared in the junkyard? They make a lot more sense when the girls see what’s waiting for them that night on Proctor Valley Road.
