I wasn’t sure at first how this series was going to fare.
I mean, I always love Jeff Lemire’s work but the original Sweet Tooth series was hallowed ground in my opinion. I needn’t have worried as this is a worthy addition to the original series and it really works.
The book begins on an ominous note.
Father has let something loose into the world. It is a one of a kind science virus. This thing will destroy the lives of every hybrid creature that it comes across.
The beginning of this issue shows why it is happening and the sick philosophy behind it all.
This makes the book very dark. The new Sweet Tooth is trying to find a way to get out of this situation.
We get to see his struggle. He has to go through one hell of a gauntlet both physically and psychologically.
He might not survive it all.
The various threads of the previous issues start to pull together. All of it leads to a frightening cliffhanger that gives us an idea of the direction this series will end on. I can tell that it won’t be a simple conclusion either.
Lemire gives this story and his characters a lot to deal with.
But it is never too complex or overly complicated. His writing is great and his artwork has never been more wonderful. This is a great series. I can’t watch to read next issue and see the full picture.
