‘Superman #29’ (review)

Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Sean Lewis
Art by Phil Hester, Sami Basri
Published by DC Comics

A new era is here for Superman!

It is a welcome one, too. Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson has taken over as writer for this book and man, what a difference it makes. The stories are smart and feel fresh.

This is a good thing and I am now looking forward to where he takes us.

This issue starts off with some great news for Superman!

His son Jonathan Kent is back from the 31st Century!

Jon immediately rejoins his father in the fight for justice and we get to see some of that battle Johnson has an immediate affinity for their relationship and the characterizations are very strong indeed.

Things go bad for the Super family quickly however. They encounter a new threat. The new threat is a bunch of cosmic leviathans. While that may not sound like a lot, this group is credited in the future by the Legion of Super-Heroes as the ones who kill Superman!

The story is beautifully written. Johnson obviously has a well thought out plan in place and it is apparent in every scene.

The art by Phil Hester, while not my favorite, is suited for this story and works well. This is a good story. If only the same could be said for the backup story.

That backup story is a Jimmy Olsen story that is fairly lame.

It is written by Sean Lewis and drawn by Sami Basri. Basri’s art is good but there isn’t really a reason for this story to exist. Well, we get to see Bibbo Bibbowski again.

Anyway, this backup didn’t work for me. Oh, well. At least the main story was quite excellent and enjoyable.

RATING: B+
