‘Commanders in Crisis #6’ (review)

The fracture in Crisis Command continues, mirroring a nation on the verge of breaking apart through a mutual secession bill in Congress, and the world itself is fraying thanks to the Extinction Society.

So how do we pull things together again?

For Frontier, the erstwhile leader of Crisis Command who has fallen out with her superhero team, the answer arrives in a bolt of lightning.

The cliffhanger of last issue brought the arrival of Thunder Woman, in some world-building that says other superheroes exist on this earth.

We also find out that Thunder Woman herself is one of those embodiments of an intangible concept, in the same way that empathy was placed inside a person.

And while other issues made passing mention to a dimension where those concepts live in creation, now we’re getting more.

It’s a nice juxtaposition, reading an uncertain Frontier next to a fully self-possessed concept goddess. Thunder Woman takes the long view and how perception shapes people’s actions.

For Sawbones, Seer, Originator and Prizefighter, pulling things together again means finding a way to keep fighting for people when empathy is dead.

In one of the best scenes from the comic so far, Prizefighter and Seer have one of those classic superhero heart-to-hearts in which they ask each other why they do what they do, and what keeps them going. It may be the best version of “we live in a society” there is, actually.

We also check in with our villain Executrix, leader of the Extinction Society, whose plan remains a bit shadowy but now we know those chambers full of hearts have grown into full clones.

And the issue lands as Crisis Command tell the world of the multiverse and the threat to existence currently under way. It’s gonna be wild to see how the world receives this mind-shattering information!
