‘Batman/Superman #16’ (review)

Written by Gene Luen Yang
Art by Ivan Reis
Published by DC Comics

Before Future State hit, this was a decent enough book that lost a bit of it’s direction: I honestly thought that it might be on it’s way to being cancelled. Then I saw the solicitation for this book and I was very intrigued. It boasted a new direction and creative team.

Let me just say that they have done a really great job on this book.

I don’t want to give too much away, but one glance at the cover and you’ll see that both Batman and Superman are sporting costumes from the 1930s.

Why? Well, the book answers that question pretty quickly.

Both Batman and Superman go on a trans dimensional adventure here.

They come across parallel worlds and different versions of characters. They are also going up against a gang of entirely new and terrifying villains.

These villains are introduced here and they are sort of outside of our reality. As the issue progresses this dynamic duo find themselves in an unexpected place, one they never expected or saw coming. They both will have to do something that they have never done before if they intend to survive this.

Gene Luen Yang gives us a great script here, very unlike work he has done before. He’s really pushing himself. Likewise, artist Ivan Reis does a killer job drawing this book.

I am excited to see where this goes. It is some really excellent new territory for these characters.

RATING: A-
