There’s not much to say here this month, because you know what happens: J’onn J’onzz, freed from the crippling shame and regret that has prevented him from being the Manhunter he truly is, confronts Charnn, finally, in his lair.
And what a confrontation it is.
Artist Riley Rossmo is in fine form, as J’onn, sporting an iconic look we’ve only seen so far this series in his flashbacks to Mars, comes face to face with the monstrous proportions of the vicious, one-time Martian convict.
Imagine J’onn’s complete surprise when he finds yet another Martian in Charnn’s laboratory – the now fully transformed Ashley Addams, who shows she’s more than a little willing to fight back, now that there’s a chance to turn the tide.
J’onn and Ashley had better hope there is anyway – because Charnn’s mentally conditioned Vulture thugs have been set against the city of Middleton to collect all the… genetic material he needs, to brings his plans to fruition. And that’s bad for the citizens of Middelton. Even detective Diane Meade’s unusual insight into the threat facing her town, or the take-charge rally of the troops she achieves, may be enough to stem the tide.
Steve Orlando barrels toward the spectacular finish of his 12-issue tour de-force treatment of the origin of one of DC’s finest, in his latest installment of a series that continues to be one of the best of the year.
And the coming out of a hero to a world he will come to protect as though it were his very own.
