TUESDAY BLUs (& DVDs): This Week’s New Releases 3/5/13

This week another batch of high profile titles including the DVD premiere of Schindler’s List and the new releases of Wreck-It Ralph, The Intouchables, The Bay, Red Dawn and one of my favorite cult films, Westworld.

Schindler’s List: 20th Anniversary Limited Edition

Experience one of the most historically significant films of all time like never before with the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition of Steven Spielberg’s cinematic masterpiece, Schindler’s List. The Intouchables

When Driss (Omar Sy), an ex-con from the projects is hired to take care of an eccentric French aristocrat named Philippe (François Cluzet) his newfound job quickly becomes an unpredictable adventure. Speeding a Maserati through Paris seducing women and paragliding over the Alps is just the beginning as Driss turns the often humorous world of upper-class Parisian society upside-down. As this unlikely duo overcome adversity of every flavor in this true story they also shatter their preconceptions of love life and each other. Based on the #1 international best-selling book You Changed My Life. 

Wreck-It Ralph (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Westworld

For $1,000 a day, vacationers can indulge whims at the theme park called Westworld. They can bust up a bar or bust out of jail, drop in on a brothel or get the drop on a gunslinger. It’s all safe: the park’s lifelike androids are programmed never to harm the customers. But not all droids are getting with the program. Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Twister) wrote and made his directing debut with this futuristic thriller that heralded moviemaking’s future as the first feature to use digitized images. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin portray pals confronted by a simulated reality turned real. And Yul Brynner is their stalking, spur-jangling nemesis. It’s man versus machine – in a tomorrow that isn’t big enough for the both of them. 

The Bay

Two million fish washed ashore. One thousand blackbirds dropped from the sky. On July 4, 2009 a deadly menace swept through the quaint seaside town of Claridge, Maryland, but the harrowing story of what happened that Independence Day has never been told – until now. From Oscarr-winning director Barry Levinson and the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious comes this nerve- shredding tale of a small town plunged into absolute terror. The authorities believed they had buried the truth about the tragedy that claimed over 700 human lives. Now, three years later, a reporter has emerged with footage revealing both the cover-up and an unimaginable killer: a mysterious parasitic outbreak. Told from the perspective of those who were there and saw what happened, The Bay unfolds over 24 hours though people’s iPhones, Androids, 911 calls, webcams, and whatever else could be used to document the nightmare in Claridge.

Lay the Favorite

Beth Raymer (Rebecca Hall) leaves her dancing job at a Florida strip club to become a Las Vegas cocktail waitress. In walks Dink (Bruce Willis), a professional sports bettor who sees through her bubbly exterior and offers her a job placing wagers all over town to gain an advantage over the casinos. Her surprisingly impeccable mind for numbers soon cements her status as Dink’s good-luck charm, until his gorgeous-but-frigid wife, Tulip (Catherine Zeta-Jones), starts to get jealous. Faced with no other choice but to fire Beth, Dink’s luck runs out when she heads to New York to work for a smarmy bookie, a turn of events that lands her squarely on the wrong side of the law. Based on a true story, Lay the Favorite is a heartfelt comedy of finding friendship in the least likely places.  

The Marine 3: Homefront

Muay Thai Warrior

Phantasm II Collector’s Edition

The Tall Man is back with a vengeance in Phantasm II, the second chapter in the cult classic Phantasm series!  Released after seven years in a mental hospital, Mike convinces his old pal Reggie to join forces with him to hunt down and destroy The Tall Man once and for all. Mike’s visions lead the two to a quiet little town where a horde of flying killer balls aim to slice and dice their gruesome way through everyone. Power Rangers: Clash of the Red Rangers Movie

Red Dawn

Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), and Isabel Lucas (Immortals) deliver a full arsenal of pulse-pounding excitement in this explosive action-adventure! The unsuspecting citizens of Spokane, Washington, wake up one morning to the shocking sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky in a surprise attack on the United States. Soon the entire city is under enemy control, but a group of courageous teenagers has decided to fight back, by waging an all-out war against the invaders, to take back their town – and their freedom! 

Regular Show: Party Pack 3

Ultramarines: Warhammer

Gun Hill Road

Yellow Brick Road & Beyond

Since its publication in 1900, Frank L. Baum s classic novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, has delighted and entertained generation after generation. This documentary takes a look at the phenomenon that is The Wizard of Oz using clips and interviews with such celebrities as Tommy Tune, Joan Leslie, Mickey Rooney, Beverly D Angelo, Joel Grey, as well as three of the original munchkins from the classic 1939 film and its producer Mervyn LeRoy. This is the complete history of The Wizard of Oz story, highlighting some of the earliest stage and screen adaptations, such as the 1925 silent version and the even earlier The Scarecrow of Oz. Collaborator

Robert Longfellow (Martin Donovan) is a famous playwright who can t seem to catch a break. Retreating to his childhood home, he crosses paths with his former neighbor, Gus (David Morse), a right-wing ex-con who is Robert s polar opposite in every possible way. At a drunken reunion gone terribly wrong, Gus holds Robert hostage at gunpoint, leading to a shattering climax as status, celebrity and the imminent threat of violence converge.
