ARCHER: “Fugue and Riffs” S4E1 (review)

By Ryan McLelland
The first episode of the fourth season of Archer is finally here
and if you missed it last night I am here to give you every single
spoiler-filled moment!
In case you skipped to
the second sentence I’ll repeat myself: I’m going to tell you everything
that happened in the episode.  If you don’t want to know then stop
reading.  OR ELSE!
And I’m going to use everyday Archer speak which
means I assume you’ve seen the show.

If you haven’t seen the show stop
reading spoilers on the current episode and go buy the first season on
DVD.  Or Blu-Ray.  Or download it on iTunes.   Netflix.  You get the
point.

If you heard that there was going to be
an episode that crossed over with Bob’s Burgers (an animated show on Fox
whose main character is also voiced by Archer star (H. Jon Benjamin)
you’ll be happy to hear that the first episode is, sort of, that
episode.  The episode starts off with Sterling Archer flipping burgers at Bob’s
Burgers
.  Except he isn’t Archer.  He’s Bob.

Even when a KGB hit squad
comes in to kill him, after Bob kills said agents, looking around at the
dead wondering just how he knows how to fight AND speak Russian – he’s
still Bob.  Something is definitely wrong with Archer. However he does
look really good with a Bob’s Burgers/Burt Reynolds-like mustache.  With
his wife Linda (John Roberts) safe, along with step-children Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman), and Louise (Kristen Schaal),
Bob decides to take a spy weekend while investigating why one of the hit
squad called him Archer.
This is the
“crossover” but it is more of a reality that Archer is living in.  There
is no Bob.  There’s only Archer in the role.  Bob IS married to Linda
and does have his step-children who look like the characters on Bob’s
Burgers.  Louise even wears her pink bunny ears. The plot is made funny
because H. Jon Benjamin voices Bob and Archer (the two practically
sounding the same) but made me surreal by having Archer think he’s Bob
and not having Archer walk into some burger shop to be served by Bob.

Back
at ISIS, Malory (Jessica Walter) is pissed off to learn that after two months of being
missing and thousands of dollars in man-hours put toward the search, that
Archer has been working at a burger joint down at the shore.  The KGB
hit squad put Archer “back on the map” and agent Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler) has tracked
Archer to a spa where he is recooperating.  We found out that what put
Archer into his amnesiac state was the marriage of Malory to a man named
Ron Cadillac.

A plan is hatched to try and
jumpstart Archer’s memory rather than just telling him who he is.  This
leads to a trip to the spa where Cyril (Chris Parnell) and Dr. Krieger (Lucky Yates) act as fake KGB
agents, Lana acts like a damsel in distress, and Malory just sits around
drinking while watching the whole thing.  Lana finds Archer by the pool
yelling at a waiter (what else is new?) and tells him that she is an
agent on the run from the KGB.  “Bob” tells her that he is also on the
run from the KGB and the two get together to wait for them together.
The
duo go “undercover” at the pool but are stopped by Comrades Cyril and
Krieger.  “Bob” pulls out his TEC-9 that Lana had furnished him with and
for a moment it is all good…until another very real KGB hit squad
shows up at the pool.  Russians abound!  A shootout begins and once
behind a bar, where they ducked for cover, Archer suddenly remembers who
he is and how he got into what he got into.  Of course this means he’s
back to being a kickass secret agent again and takes out the baddies
using Molotov cocktails and his awesome lacrosse skills.

So
Archer has his memory back and the day is saved.  Everything’s great
right?  Except who actually sent out KGB hit squads to kill Archer?
That turns out to be Barry – the super insane cyborg who was left in
space at the end of Season 3.  He’s still pretty angry that he’s stuck
in space and is even more disappointed that he can’t kill Archer from
there as well.
WHAT IS COMING UP NEXT WEEK?
Timothy Olyphant guest stars with a slew of incredible Archer cameos to make
any fan truly happy.  Blink and you’ll miss them, but come back for next
week’s recap and I’ll have it all right here!
