‘The Prisoner #1’ (review)

The Prisoner was always one of those concepts that was so damn good.

Yet, it never seemed to get the story just right for me. The original television series started off strong and then ended up being completely goofy.

Then, there was the television mini-series a few years back that ended up just being stupid.

There’s also been a few attempts in comic book forms from the likes of Jack Kirby and Gil Kane and one from DC awhile back.

All ended up just being strange or weird.

This one however starts off promising. And I have faith in writer Peter Milligan.

The comic starts off with an introduction to the character of Breen. He is the focus of the first issue. It shows him as being a spy of sorts. The opening scene has him running away for knowledge of something called Pandora.

The world at large seems to be against this guy. He’s all over the news branded as a traitor. Yet, the rest of the issue has him being led to the island of the series. The island is the crazy place where all sorts of things happen and it’s legendary.

Breen is the Number 6 of the series. Milligan spends the first issue getting us acquainted with him. It may be a good move. It’s hard to tell with the first issue if it’ll be worth it. But it seems like it might be.

We don’t get to the island until he end. And the island is the crux to the series. The setup is great but will the next issue move? Or will it be more setup? How long will this series be and can it possibly be satisfying?

These are the questions in my head while reading this.

The art is decent. Lorimar experiments with a few scenes and it works pretty well. It’s pretty. I’m intrigued to see where it’s going but I’m hedging my bets as I’ve been let down some many times before with this franchise.
