‘Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #9’ (review)

Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Steve Lieber
Published by DC Comics

This comic book is a hell of lot more fun than it has any right to be.

Matt Fraction is writing a really hilarious story here that is also strangely compelling. Steve Lieber has been doing a great job with the art, making Fraction’s story even better. This book is pretty damn cool.

The opening scene is my favorite of the book.

We get to see a Charles Schulz inspired opening called “Li’l Olsens” much like the strip “Li’l Folks.” It is beautiful and inspired and I laughed multiple times in this utterly brilliant opening.

From there we get to see the Kandorland Amusement Park.

Jimmy is doing a little reporting in the park. He goes around and talks about the rides. He talks to some of the people at the amusement park. It is all completely strange and completely wonderful.

The Floyd Belkin interview is my favorite part of this section. I absolutely loved his interview.

We then go back to “L’il Olsens” for another funny chapter. We get to see Perry White’s reaction to all of Jimmy’s antics. And then we get to see a new villain called the Porcadillo. We get to see Jimmy interact with him and that is hilarious.

We also get to see Jimmy attend a Casino Night and he immediately comes up against Lex Luthor. It is a great last story to end on. This book is a bevy of fun. I am only sad that it is a mini-series. There is a lot of good stuff happening here.

RATING: A-
