This series is fantastic. I’ve been loving it thus far. And this issue here is where everything just takes off.
The last two issues were all set up, and now the payoff is happening.
Brian Michael Bendis does it again and this is a mighty fine chapter of this book.
The opening sequence is a flashback to the story of Kit. It involves a stolen ring and then an act of violence. Kit is beaten and it’s a harsh scene to watch.
Then we cut to present day and we see Kit as a sniper. She is focused on a target. And she is remembering her beating.
This leads to a rather unfortunate turn of events that changes everything.
She fires her gun. It’s a hell of a scene that leads to a full out battle.
Maleev does an amazing job on the storytelling aspect of the issue. His pacing of the the panels is perfect and expertly done. It makes your heart jump and you can’t believe what it is you are seeing.
This is a beautifully illustrated sequence that should be studied by aspiring artists. It’s a sequential masterpiece in comic book form.
The rest of the issue follows suit. An all out war erupts. Maleev visually just owns the issue and things get explosive. Bendis does mess with time a bit too in the writing portion and it blends seamlessly. It’s truly stunning.
Scarlet comes to a revelation as the issue comes to a close. The creative team ends it on a dramatic note with Scarlet holding up a white flag.
What’s going to happen? Who knows! And that is the best part. You have no idea. And that is a great place for a reader to be.
