Koren Shadmi is somewhat of an anomaly as far as being a comic book creator. He writes and draws books that are all over the map, whether it’s science fiction, horror, or biography.
His book about Twilight Zone creator Rod Sterling called Twilight Man was a good success for him a few years back. Now Shadmi is back with a biography about Bela Lugosi.
This new book is pretty spectacular, too.
I only knew any of Lugosi’s history from the film Ed Wood. It’s one of my favorite films. This is a bit different, but I loved it. It was like watching a film play out on an old black and white television set.
We get to see Lugosi as a child.
The book shows us his formative years and how he advanced in life to become the performer he eventually became. Some of the details in these parts are pretty uncanny.
We also get to see a lot of his bad decisions.
Those decisions are hard to ignore and put the reader in a position of wondering if Lugosi really made his own bed here. It is sort of brutal to watch sometimes but always engaging.
Shadmi does a great job as usual. His research is great and his writing is spot on. His artwork is always spectacular too and this is one of the better releases of the year. Well done.
