Deadline reports that director Justin Lin is attached to an adaptation of Kazuo Koike’s classic manga, Lone Wolf and Cub.
The seminal work, which is currently in print stateside from Dark Horse Comics, takes place during the “set feudal Edo period, and chronicles the story of Ogami Itto, the
Shogun’s elite executioner. In an attempt to take his position, the
rival Yagyu clan falsely accuses Itto of a crime and murders his wife.
Disgraced, Itto is forced to wander Japan with his three-year-old son
Daigoro as an assassin for hire, earning the title “Lone Wolf and Cub.”
Ultimately, Itto and Daigoro seek revenge on the Yagyu clan.”
This adaptation will be scripted by screenwriters David & Janet Peoples, best known for their work on the films Blade Runner, Unforgiven and Twelve Monkeys. Lin is currently prepping the sixth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise and remarked, “I’ve long admired the Peoples and their enduring body of work. They’re a wonderful match for Lone Wolf and Cub and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them on this powerful, epic tale.”
Lone Wolf and Cub was previously filmed as a series of six Japanese films beginning in 1972 with Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance.
