The Swedish rock group ABBA launched in 1972 consisting of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. With ten years, ABBA (named after the first initial of each of the group’s four members) became one of the most successful acts in the world.
Among their hit singles were Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me, Fernando, Waterloo, Mama Mia, The Winner Takes All, SOS and Knowing Me, Knowing You.
After ABBA broke up in early 1983, the band went off in different directions, and ABBA’s popularity declined until their music appeared in such films as Muriel’s Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
In 1999, the successful musical Mamma Mia! toured internationally utilizing ABBA’s music. The musical was adapted into a film of the same name in 2008 (with a sequel released earlier this summer). ABBA reunited on March 15, 2010 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
