‘Future State: Dark Detective #1’ (review)

Written by Mariko Tamaki, Matthew Rosenberg
Art by Dan Mora, Carmine Di Giandomenico
Published by DC Comics

The Future State storyline has had a lot of intriguing setups so far and this story is really interesting as well.

While some of the other titles have new characters taking over some big mantles, this story features Bruce Wayne in a way that we have never really seen him before!

The first few pages hooked me right away!

We start off by seeing a strange, almost futuristic version of Gotham City. There is a figure by a fence. He is standing brooding. We see that it is Bruce Wayne.

Suddenly, we have a flashback. Bruce is wounded and running from a mysterious criminal who says “we know who you are.”

So what is going on here?

It appears that the evil Magistrate has taken over Gotham City. We learn that everyone thought that Bruce was dead.

But Bruce wasn’t dead. He was just regrouping. That is what this issue is all about.  It is about Bruce becoming Batman and changing tactics and it is pretty awesome.

The book also has a backup story with the Grifter as they are trying to make him relevant in the DC Universe. This story doesn’t do much to make that goal. The two creators, writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Carmine Di Giandomenico, are good but the character is very dated.

The main story is worth reading. The story by Mariko Tamaki is very good. And artist Dan Mora does a hell of a job on the art. I am intrigued where they are going with this. I have a feeling that it is going to be pretty great.

RATING: A-
