‘Detective Comics #1016’ (review)

Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Doug Mahnke
and Tyler Kirkham
Published by DC Comics

This has to be the best Mister Freeze story that has ever been done. At least I think so. The writing by Tomasi is super sharp and the art has just been magnificent. I am thinking that this will one day end up being a classic.  It really is that good and memorable. This here is the final chapter of the story.

The fun starts off at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mister Freeze’s wife is up to no good. Freeze himself is now teamed up with Batman to stop her. They know where she is and they formulate a plan to stop here. The next stop is the Gotham Museum of Art!

Time for a final confrontation.

Mrs. Freeze has taken over the museum and have frozen a lot of the people who were in there.  One of the guards tries to stop her but fails. Things are looking pretty bleak.

And that is when Batman and Freeze come crashing into the museum.

A huge battle breaks out! Freeze and Batman battle Mrs. Freeze in a battle royale!

It is a hell of a fight scene and it is choreographed very well. It looks for a second that Freeze might get the upper hand on his wife. But she makes short work of him. She escapes and it is a sad and brutal ending.

The last few pages are emotional and sad. The creative team really makes them resonate. Victor’s fate is a vicious cycle in the end. It is the perfect finale for this story.

It hits all the right notes and it is truly and utterly unforgettable.

RATING: A
